Where in the world do you get your info. Maybe you need some counselling, seriously. Do you know how many good but scrupulous Catholics take your message to heart and leave the church, because of your hang-ups. I cannot believe the animousity that so many of the modesty police show on this site. I am also worried about the very young girls who are admonished on a daily basis for just trying to be happy and young. Oh please don’t give me your insight into what you think the church believes or the saints, who have been dead for centuries. Their clothing is just that 100 plus years old. Please do not tell me that we should dress as the BVM did thousands of years ago. Look at the Vatican, no pope has removed the nude paintings and statues there, talk about occasions of sin to weak individuals who cannot take a short dress or a low cut shirt. No you really should be Amish, in the Fundamental Morman Church, or better than that a member of the taliban.
Kathleen, I don’t really understand, how is it part of being “happy and young” to wear shorter skirts? I’m young… I’m not unhappy to wear longer skirts  not arguing with you just want to know…

Monica if you are happy great. Other people are happy too! We do not need a religious guru to tell us about morality and modesty! It is just over-kill! No one who is happy brings up this subject 24/7. All of the posts are so dreary about the sin of immodesty. I see very young girls at my church who look 60 years old. If lthey want to look like that fine. I don’t care, but please leave us who are living in 2011 alone with your pontifications! Have a great day!🙂

how am I ‘pontificating’? and how I am bringing this up 24/7? I think all I did in this thread was ask about skirt length, and answered the OP’s question. Like I said, it’s possible to find long skirts that look nice. I disagree that 2011 is about wearing short skirts. There’s no “dress code” for 2011, 😛 there’s no rule that to look ‘modern’ you need to reveal parts of your body. Is this not modern? 🙂 newsyolk.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/long-skirts-for-women.jpg raulharper.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Long-Skirts1.jpg

And may I add in 2011, middle-aged+ women, who now have young bodies, thanks to the gym, are also happy and wear little short skirts.

So Kathleen, it has nothing to do with age. Not every young person wears short skirts and cleavage baring clothes.

Also, you are the second person that mentioned they have long, skinny legs, so it is okay for them to wear short skirts. Ridiculous!

I thought of this thread today as I waited for the train. I saw a woman who was about 5’11 wearing a short skirt about 6 inches above her knees. Because her legs are so long, she attracted even more attention because she had legs that did not end. On the contrary, a shorter woman, about 5’2 with a skirt above the knees did not look half as immodest.

I believe all women of all body types should dress decently. And yes, you can be fashionable and modest.

Monica I was talking about all of the modesty posts, not just yours. Like I said if you are happy great! We are not just talking about short skirts. Bathing suits, shorts, skating dresses, gymnastic wear, tennis outfits are all under the guise of immoral by the modesty police. Yes these are popular clothing wore in 2011!

I agree as long as a person in in good shape and looks nice, not vulgar. She can wear many more fashions. I also agree it has nothing to do with age. What are you going to say next, that it is wrong to emphasize ones eyes with make-up. Or how about this what if your hands are extremely beautiful, should you not wear rings. Let’s face it too many people are upset that a person who watches their weight or is just naturally thin can wear the newest fashions. Are you going to say high heels are wrong because a woman’s legs look better in them than Burkinstocks. Oh please, this is just so ridiculous!

I’d agree so far as to say that sometimes, there seems to be a bit of an obsession with women’s clothing. Speaking of serving the devil because a bit of knee is showing, is in my opinion, a bit over the top.
On the other hand, I think dressing modestly is important. Yes, we have a right to dress nicely, especially as women - it seems to be ingrained! BUT nice does not mean, a least in my book, wearing clothing that advertises my body instead of accentuating it.
Practically, that means: I do wear skirts that come to the top of my knees or are longer, it depends on the style of the skirt if it attracts attention in itself or not, but I will not wear miniskirts. I will not cover up to my neck, but I won’t show a plunging neckline, either. I do not wear skintight or sheer clothing - but I won’t be caught in baggy sacks!

Moderation is the key in all things, apart from love.

There seems to be different opinions on what is appropriate to wear. How do we decide? How about searching church teaching on the matter. What a concept!

I can say for sure, at the highschool events I attend, the boys look so much more mature and sharp relative to the girls. It is to the point of being really sad. These events make it clear that we should ask ourselves as a community, “what are we doing to our young women?”

The boys wear jacket and tie with great pants and dress shoes. The girls wear, well, what a real slut would strut around in.

Another event with similar disparity was my daughters confirmation that was between sophmore and junior year in high school. What the girls wore to church was positively incredible. One of them that was chomping on gum even went for the Eucharist. Amazing!

I would never call a young lady a slut. But then again, you are the modesty police! Congratulations on hurting a group of young ladies with your disgusting comments. Only You know what anyone should wear, whether young or old. It is also interesting that we talk about the immodest, yet we gloss over the sins of the priests who have molested children, men and boys, and young ladies. They are in the church, yet we forgive their sins, and place them on the ladies that may wear a sleeveless blouse in 100 degree temps.Just thinking! Your excuses run rampid. IMHO!

I agree with you there. I don’t believe in using words that denigrate girls or women.

We’re not talking here about Priests sexually abusing children. I would think most sane Catholics who are not perverts are seriously grieved by the sexual abuse scandal.

You sound like a non-Catholic,. whose only rebuttal to any debates is: “Don’t talk to me about anything. Take a look at your priests”!

As a pre-Catholic, all I have to say is shame on you!

What is the greater sin, molestation or wearing a sleeless shirt to mass. Give me a break!!!

You are justifying your behavior by lashing out at others, namely priests.

This is irrational.

Even more intersting! The truth finally comes out.
What is the truth samuel, that you hate women? It is really pathetic that you wear a suit of armour, does your wife and children do the same? Armour really protects all from sin, is that why you post it?

I am quite surprised the parents of the young people in your post not only let them get away with wearing improper dress for their Confirmation day, and the gum chewing but still going up to receive the Blessed Sacrament. At least my sister who did not always dress modestly as a teen, wore a nice dress that went to her knees when she was confirmed even though it was sleeveless (and some people these days would have said it was immodest, but my sister wasn’t much on church going - she went cause my mom insisted as my sister wasn’t an adult yet). My class on the other hand our catechists made sure we knew how we were to dress for Confirmation, and the girls wore either dresses or skirts with nice shirts. The boys dressed up nice too.

I remember when I was around 9 years old, that my mother overheard some teens eating near her at church. She whispered to their parents about the kids eating, and I am sure my mother who is well known for sometimes saying things she shouldn’t would have had a fit if she noticed the same teens in the Communion line. Perhaps the parent(s) of the teens felt guilty, and made sure the teens didn’t receive Communion.

I went to Mass this past Sunday, and was shocked but kept thoughts to myself of some of the women and girls that went up to Communion with bare shoulders, spaghetti strapped shirts, back backs and/or cleavage exposure.

I wore a black dress that wasn’t tight with short sleeves, tights, nice shoes and a head scarf. I certainly hope that they were not thinking I was a freak for veiling. I will continue to cover my head at Mass no matter if I am the only one or among many doing so.

I think those women were thinking beach, not Mass with their clothes.

Our Priest expects proper dress code and explains it about 4-5 times a year. Shorts and T-shirts are out, doesn’t like jeans buy many of us wear them to daily mass…you don’t see them Sundays.

As far as the women no bare shoulders or cleavage, tight fitting pants that reveal panty lines.

I have a long skirt that goes way past my knees and a nice short sleeve shirt to wear when I go to the EF Mass this Sunday. I am sure I will not feel out of place being dressed nicely and modestly. 🙂

First of all, pre-Vat. II, women in this country did not usually wear veils to Mass. They wore hats or scarves, even a hanky or kleenex in an emergency. The chapel veil in this country was popularized by Jackie Kennedy in the early 60’s, and caught on quickly. Wearing a chapel veil is far from traditional in this country. She probably picked it up in one of her extensive travels. The custom is only about 40-50 years old. And Jackie often wore a hat to Mass (usually a pillbox). Now in other countries, women have been veiling far longer, esp in the Middle East, Spain and Italy, although Eastern Europen women wore headscarves.

Secondly, the color of the veil was determined by the season. In the summer it is customary to wear white or light colored clothing. In the cold months, dark clothing is worn. So in the summer, white or a light -colored veil or chapel cap was worn, while in the winter black or dark colors were worn. In this country, there was no custom for veiling that called for a difference between married and unmarried women. It was a seasonal thing. Now I have read that in some other countries, ones that have a long tradition of veiling, marriage status was indicated by veil color–can’t remember where I read that). But not in the US.

It seems to me people are trying to make something traditional out of something that is not. Now veils are nice, and I wore them in the 60’s at times, but they are not what we usually wore to Church before the Kennedys. We wore our best clothes with a nice hat and gloves to match, or a headscarf in a pretty pattern. But after Jackie Kennedy, women started to wear the veil. It was not an act of piety–it was a fashion statement. And in reality, when the veil-wearing started, the clothes became more casual, whereas when you had a nice hat to match your outfit, you tended to dress up more.

So now you know the history more or less of the chapel veil, it’s not what people seem to think. Most of the “older” women around here can verify that. If you really want to be traditional, buy a nice hat that matches your outfit:D
A “nice hat” is considered a veil. I think you are thinking of a mantilla, as veils come in all fashions as a veil covers your head and possibly your face.
