Grace and Peace,

I was trying to think of something for my Brother’s family and I was thinking of getting them a painting…

What would be a good Traditional Catholic piece of Art for me to get them?

All suggestions are welcome. 🙂
 
Did you wish to specify whether of Jesus or Mary?

If it’s just art as art, why not Druer’s ADORATION OF THE MYSTIC LAMB, aka Ghent altarpiece.

And then there’s Salvador Dali’s ST JOHN OF THE CROSS–the one that shows a top view of the Crucifixion, with the Sea of Galilee below it. (His CRUCIFIXION shows a bearless Christ superimposed on the Last Supper.)

WOW did you go from one end of spectrum to the other. I really like Dali’s piece, in fact I just gave out cards with that painting on it to our 8th grade students. But if the OP is looking for traditional it may be a bit too modern. But I do like Dali’s work because it makes one think about the theology behind the painting.

Anyway, how about a nice icon?
 
I was kind of wondering…just what is “traditional Catholic art” anyway? Does it include early Christian art, Christian art of the 4th-11th centuries along with late medieval art? Personally I think they are to be included under the category (after all, they were THE art of the Church during those time periods…), but how exactly are we to define the term?

I’m not sure Dali’s work really captures my vision of ‘Traditional’ Catholic Art… it’s Modern Art with religious overtures intended to shock some might say but I appreciate the suggestion. I would have never thought of it. Thanks.
 
my preferance would be for a good copy of one of the classic icons (rather than one by a modern writer). If I were buying a statue of Mary it would be the copy of the wooden Madonna from Bavaria in the Ignatius catalog
 
Personally, my preference would be these 4th century mosaics of both Jesus and the apostles and Jesus and St. Peter from the Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore in Milan and Santa Costanza in Rome, respectively:





Though these representations might be “too early.” 😃
 
I don’t think of Iconography as being merely art, even traditional art–it’s so much more.

I’d have to ‘second’ the recommendation on Dali’s St John of the Cross.

It’s a really nice piece.
