Hi!

What are the suggested reading materials for the Traditional Catholics? I just want to go deeper. We have the ‘Imitation of Christ’ and I think it is well–loved by the Traditional Catholic, so I want to look for more ‘Imitation of Christ’-like books.

I’ll love to have a Traditional Catholic Library.

Most of my books come from TAN publishers. Here’s a short list:
The Incredible Catholic Mass by Father Martin von Cochem
The Four Last Things by Father Martin von Cochem
Purgatory Explained by Father F.X. Schouppe
Prayer: The Key to Salvation by Father Michael Mueller
True Devotion to Mary by St. Louis De Montfort
The Spiritual Combat by Dom Lorenzo Scupoli
Francis of Assisi by St. Bonaventure
the Saints series by F.A. Forbes
The Blessed Eucharist

I love ‘Imitation of Christ’ and ‘The Spiritual Combat’, which Scott D. mentioned.

‘Introduction to the Devout Life’ by St. Francis de Sales is on a lot of people’s lists.

‘The Story of a Soul’, by St. Thérèse of Liseux, and
‘My Spirit Rejoices’, by Elisabeth Leseur are both readable and inspiring.

‘A Do It at Home Retreat’ by Fr. André Ravier is a different sort of book. To benefit from it, you need to slow down and spend more time praying than reading. Fr. Ravier has specific recommendations on how to do that while going through the retreat.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I am looking for a traditional bookstore here, but it seems only the SSPX have a Traditional Book Store. Is it OK to buy from them?

If I were in your situation, I would shop there, at least once. Whether I continued to go to that book store would depend on whether my visits there were helping or hindering me from growing in charity.

I shop at Angelus Press frequently. They provide good service and rapid order fullfilment.
I have never been disappointed.

Tan Books is very good. Also Preserving Christian Publications.

If you don’t mind etexts, try Saints’ Books for free lives and writings of the saints. 😃

I always suggest St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori’s works, he is truly a wonderful and wide ranging author, after reading him you will feel as if he has put you more greatly on the path of salvation. 🙂

St. Claude de la Colombiere is a gentle spiritual director of souls to read for souls who need a soft touch. 🙂

‘Endeavor to have always in your hand a pious book, that with this shield you may defend yourself against bad thoughts.’

St. Jerome

I especially love Fr. Schouppe’s Purgatory, St. Bonaventure’s St. Francis, the Spiritual Combat and True Devotion among others. Great! 😃

Fr. Schouppe’s Purgatory is a life changing read. 🙂

Boy, you aren’t kidding there. I read it when I was a fairly new convert and I couldn’t stop thinking about it for quite a while.

Another suggestion-anything by G.K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, or Fr. Francis Finn, who has been called the Catholic Charles Dickens.

Yes, I read it around conversion time too. 🙂 It laid the foundation for a good deal.

So many good recommends in this thread!

There’s nothing like St. John and St. Teresa.

Love Your Enemies. The Maoris of New Zealand have had enough of being cheated by the English and rebel. Meanwhile, the Patrick O’Neal
family, trying to start a new life there, are overtaken by a marauding tribe and must flee for their lives, all the while trying to practice in
earnest that hardest of Christian maxims: “Love Your Enemies.”

Maron. It is Lebanon in 1860, and the Druses are persecuting the Christians under the complicit eye of the Turkish government. The
Mufti of Sidon incites the mob to kill the Christian dogs even as his son Ali, sickened by the slaughter, helps his Christian friend Maron
flee to the hills, and learns from his actions the reality of grace and the gifts of the Holy Ghost

wow! thank you for listing those books! it is really wonderful to see a list, now I can have my prospective list of what to buy. I called SSPX here in the Philippines to inquire about books. The brother seems to be very kind. But he can’t remember the prices, but he remembered the price of the Baronius Misssal. i think it is their bestseller.

I have now the Confraternity version of the Bible, the new testament and some books from the Old. I am also considering to buy Douay Rheims or the Baronius Missal, but my money would be sufficient to buy one of them. Can someone help me what to buy? I can use the DR everyday, but the Missal I can only use once a year since Latin Mass is not available in my Archdiocese. I hope you’ll understand me.

Are you sure the SSPX Brother was talking about the Baronius Missal? SSPX, Angelus Press, makes their own missal so he was probably talking about that one. The Angelus Press Missal is way better, IMHO, and we have both. The content is mostly the same (even the pictures) but the Baronius is much thicker due, not to additional content, but to a bad layout and use of space on the page. The Angelus Press Missal is nice and tidy and easier to follow - and not as bulky.

Conserve your money.

Check used bookstores and Ebay for the titles listed in this thread. I found some of them for as little as $0.50US. If you wish to purchase a new missal, my recommendation is the Angelus Press Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962. Angelus also has a Sunday Missal Booklet for very low price.

Also take advantage of online resources when possible.

The complete Douay-Rheims Bible can be viewed online at:
drbo.org/
A tutorial for the Traditional Latin Mass can be viewed online at:
sanctamissa.org/en/index.html
The complete Liturgy of the Hours can be viewed online at:
universalis.com/

They sell the booklet here for US$1.00 which is very interesting for me.
And thank you for the links! In my area, they don’t sell much religious books, especially the Traditional ones. But will try again, will try hunting again 👍

Yes, he’s talking about the Baronius Missal. I was expecting that he’ll be offering me the Angelus Press missal, but he said, as if he knew I want a Angelus version, that what they have is the Baronius version.

For a good traditional catechism, I would suggest you try “The Aquinas Catechism” and my favourite, the Baltimore Catechism :signofcross:.

Also, “The Catholic Sanctuary” from TAN!!!

hallelujah!

thanks to mick321 who reminded me of the amazing eBay!👍

I saw a Baronius Douay Bible for less than the orginal price, but I am still undecided. I prefer the TAN version coz it looks very modern but the seller is not offering it. What are the pros and cons of the Baronius Bible?

I hope this one is not OT for this thread.

PS: The seller now has listed the TAN version. Adrenalin rushing. God bless us all.
