Hi all! I am looking for some traditional Catholic funeral songs, pre 1962 & pre Marty Haugen. I would love to know what the hymns are that used be sung in days past, before On Eagles Wings became popular in our Churches.

I’ve done a search of old threads, but didn’t find anything really traditional. Is How Great Thou Art appropriate for a funeral?

Thanks!

Honestly… “When the Saints go Marching In” was originally written for funerals. Of course, it’s best used as the recessional.

Softly and Tenderly.
Dies Irae.
What Wondrous Love is This?
Ubi Caritas
May the Angels Lead you Into Paradise
In Paradisium
Panis Angelicus for communion.
I Come with joy to meet my Lord

There’s oodles. No need to used the tired Be Not Afraid, Eagles Wings, Amazing Grace.

Although Healer of Our Every Ill is really nice form that era.

I don’t know if this song is traditional for use at a funeral but “Be Thou My Vision” has been used for funerals.

I personally love “In Paradisium”. It is heart wrenchingly beautiful.

Never heard it. Regardless, in addition to any songs specifically for funerals, I would think that many songs about either (a) the resurrection (such as sung during Easter) or (b) discipleship would be appropriate.

May the Angels - adapted by Nicholas t Freund
I Call You to My Father’s House -
May the Angels Lead You

Lord, Receive Your Servant

Jesus, Lord have Mercy
I know that my Redeemer Lives

(699-707) We Celebrate hymnal 2011-2014

Same hymnal:

At the Funeral Mass, we recall the power of the Spirit in baptism, in which the deceased was made a member of the church, the Body of Christ. We hear the word of God’s love proclaimed, the love that desires to be one with us for all eternity. We offer our sacrifice of thanks and praise for the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, which opened the gates of heaven; our sacrificial meal is Christ’s own body and blood. We pray our farwell, entrusting the soul of the departed to the mercy of God.

Rite of Reception at the Church

Sprinkling with Holy Water and placing the Pall

217 Amazing Grace
Opening Prayer
Literagy of the Word

218 The Lord is My Shepherd: Psalm 23
Literagy of the Eucharist
Communion Rite
Prayer of the Faithful

Some of those songs you posted are from the 1970’s. I’m looking for traditional hymns that praise God, songs that are sung to God about God. I love Panis Angelicus. I guess what I need are hymns that the modern day choir can sing, using a piano, because there are no longer organs in most of our churches

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t this traditionally chanted while the departed was moved from the Church to the cemetery?

Breathtaking

You’re not wrong. We sing at during the incensing of the casket and on the way out of the funeral Mass, since we have no cemetery on the property.

May the Angels Greet You (in Gather) is a doable version of the same piece.

If you have a Fraternity of St. Peter parish in your diocese, why don’t you call them for assistance? If not, if you go to their website and contact them, I am sure they will be happy to help you.

They have Gregorian chant and an organ, believe me, if they were even remotely close, I would not only consult them, I would drive all day just to get to Mass there

Yes, I know that, but they might be able to help you adapt the hymns to piano. That’s why I mentioned them. Sorry I wasn’t more clear in my post. 🙂
