Traditional Catholic Hymns

Why are so few Catholic hymns sung? I ask because I play the organ, and I have never found in my organ repetoire a single Catholic hymn - granted that I normally play older music (as in 17th and 18th century music). I like to play chorale preludes, which are basically just a type of organ piece where the melody of a hymn is set to more “complex” music, so it doesn’t just sound like the organist is playing a hymn without people singing.

Does anyone have any favorites hymns? If so, do you have a link for them on Youtube or sheet music? Thank you.
 
i am new to this sacred music. I like the priests’ versions of Panis Angelicus and Pie Jesu. I hoe this songs would be used even on a vernacular NO Masses. These songs are beautiful, and accompany them with pipe organ…what a beautiful world…

OCP and other houses make money from royalties paid by folks (you and your fellow parishioners), who use copyrighted hymns that these houses own.
Traditional Catholic music has no copyrights. These publishing houses, as well as their associates and employees, are in business to make money.
A lot of the music issue is all about money.
Ask your pastor (if he will tell you at all) how much you and your fellow parishioners pay each year to OCP and/or whatever houses you/they patronize. Make sure the amount he tells you is the total amount including planners and other special items.
I think you will be amazed at how much you pay to sing and/or listen to this pop slop.

BTW, I haven’t heard a Catholic hymm at my parish since before Easter.

I feel your pain! We’ve got OCP and this 70s guitar book. It’s a shame that the progressives push and push to get their way and are welcomed with open arms, but when the traditionals push they’re called crazy. 🤷

Youtube user Giovanni Vianini (user site youtube.com/user/vianinigiovanni) has a plethora of traditional Catholic hymns (635+ and counting). Many of them are set to Gregorian chant, but they could point you in the direction of traditional Catholic hymns you’ve never heard. As a bonus, he puts up the sheet music for a lot of them on his videos. His voice is amazingly beautiful!

When I attend a Novus Ordo service, I notice that they either sing hymns that I am not fanmiliar with or they sing popular Protestant hymns. I have no objction to these Protestant hymns; some I find quite lovely BUT what really hurts me is the dearth of Catholic hymns from my youth. I am deeply aggrieved and often feel betrayed by the modern church since Vatican II. Where are the hymns of the St. Basil Hymnal and the St. Cecelia Hymnal taught by the good sisters in Catholic schools of the past? I am not referring to Latin hymns, either. Yes, perhaps I could experience the hymns of my youth at a traditional Mass but they are few and far between where I live. What is so wrong with these beautiful hymns that HMC expunged them?

i do have objections to protestants songs in the CC. the hymns are prayers cantata. how we pray determines how we believe. since protestants do not believe as we believe, we have a big problem here. the protestants music in the Church has done great damage to the Mass. can anyone see that?

oh how beautifull. thank you. this brings me back to my Faith the Catholic faifh.
this is very appropriate to our times. there is a reason why we should bring this back into the Church, one never gets tired of listen to it. not so with these modern songs, it is very tiresome after you hear on one sunday, you sure dont want hear next sunday again.

Just type in the name of a hymn on Youtube, i.e., Ave Marie, Panis Angelicus,Immaculate Mary, Holy God, etc.

Those are some I remember from the 1950’s.
 
Not all so-called Protestant hymns are actually Protestant. I did a quick survey of the hymns in the Episcopal Hymnal of 1940 (one of the books I would want if I were stuck on a desert island), and found that about one third were actually Catholic. When I get a chance I am going to go through the hymnal more carefully, and check each hymn. I was surprised to find that some hymns were actually written by Catholic priests, converts from Anglicanism.

Other than some of the ones already mentioned, ‘God of Mercy and Compassion’ (youtube.com/watch?v=-4W_CLRW9Lo), is one of my all time favourites, and made a long-overdue comeback in my parish this Lent.

Another great hymn I remember is ‘Go Ye Afar’, the anthem of the Spiritans. I loved it at school, but sadly it’s only notable by its absence in our current hymnal.

Panis Angelicus is an incredible hymn - even my non-Catholic grandmother talks of seeing John McCormack singing it at the 1932 Eucharistic Congress in Dublin on newsreel.

I don’t doubt for one minute what you say is true BUT when I started this trend, I was speaking of hymns that I was familiar with which seem to have vanished since the Second Vatican Council.
