Traditional Catholic Resources for the Old Testament

I am looking for anything and everything.
  1. Sermons from saints and/or traditional priests on any of the below topics.
  2. Traditional Prayers (e.g. Collects, Introits, other prayers) mentioning any of the above episodes in the story of salvation.
  3. Traditional Artwork on these (I am using a lot of Gustave Dore)
  4. Anything else that helps explain these topics from a traditional point of view (if I can include liturgical aspects that touch on these topics than that would be fantastic)
Adam and Eve (Fall, Abel, etc)
Noah and the Ark
Tower of Babel
Abraham and Isaac, Melchizadek, Covenant,
Jacob
Joseph and the Famine
Moses - 10 Commandments, Plagues
Joshua, Judges, Ruth Samuel
Saul, David, Solomon
Finishing Historical Books
Wisdom Books -Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecc, Song of Songs, Sirach
Major Prophets
Minor Prophets
 
sorry Matt, I don’t. I’m sure you’ve already tried Tan Books and Angelus Press. How about the Haydock DR Bible Commentary?

I’m not fully sure what you want since you’ve included basically the whole OT 🙂 but each of the prophets had (and have, even in the NO) their own Mass. Look in a pre -1910 altar missal for them - there are a couple on GoogleBooks and they will be found in the appendix marked ‘Pro Aliquibus locis’. As for stories - well, for example, the Lenten and Easter Masses are very replete with references, as are some of the blessings excerpted from the Ritual in an appendix of the missal. The Spaiential books are oftne use din Masses of the BVM and those of virgins
 
Yeah I basically am writing on the whole OT 🙂

Do you have a link to such a pre-1910 hand missal? Do you know the dates of the prophet’s feastdays? That would be a huge help in writing my catechism lessons.

Does Noah have a Mass?
 
You may want to find a copy of the Catholic Biblical Commentary, Edited by Dom Orchard. As well as look at the Carmelite Liturgy, as they Have a feast for Elijah the Prophet.

Do you have a link to a Traditional Carmelite Liturgy missal? I would need the prayers from the Feast of Elijah.
 
You will have to pick the ball up from here. I have a traditional Carmelite altar Missal, but really don’t have time to transcribe the Propers just now. I’m sure a little nose to the grindstone, on your part will be successful.

Go to books.google.com and type in:

intitle:missale

in the search box. It might be quicker if you filter it with the “limited view or full view” from the dop down box. I’m outside the USA right now so some material is not available to me, hence I cant link directly. Click on the ones that say something like “missale romanum ex decreto, etc.” IIRC, the last time I looked there was one from around 1799, one from 1862 and one from 1884. I would go would the 1884 first and then the 1862 - the appendix was not so filled out in 1799. Look in the appendix of the saints names for the OT figures you want. They may or may not have Noah - I know they have Daniel, Samuel, Jeremiah, Elijah and other OT prophets.

Noah though did have two references in the pre-1955 ('51) Holy Week - one in the prayer of palms and the other in the prophecy about the ark (no. 2 or maybe it was 3 - you can check that)

Try the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, published by IVP.

It’s sort of like a modern Catena (St. Thomas Aquinas’ compilation of the writings of the Fathers on the Gospels) for the whole Bible.

Then there’s St. Augustine’s work on the Psalms

Also, there are St. Gregory of Nyssa’s The Life of Moses, St. Bernard’s Commentary on the Song of Songs, and (depending upon how good your Latin is), St. Jerome’s Commentary on Isaiah.

St Augustine has at least three works on Genesis, some of which are unfinished. I’ve read his commentary on the Six Days of Creation. I’m not sure how much further he gets in his commentaries. I don’t have my copy of the IVP work on Genesis, but that volume will definitely have something of interest.

I found the 1884 one and looked through it. On page clxxix is a list of the saints, but I can not find any Old Testament figures. Yet, my Latin is not that good either, so I may be missing them.

I would suggest then the 1862 version which has all of them at the back. But for the 1884, make sure you are lookign at the correct list of saints. They have several indexes - one for all the saints which are in the universal calendar. The names won’t be there. There is, IIRC, also one for a local appendix, and then one for the saints ‘pro clero Romano’. Look in that index.
 
I’m currently looking for any Church teachings (encyclicals, apostolic constitutions, etc) that mention Joseph from the Old Testament. Does anyone know of anything from the Church that mentions that Joseph in any way?
