What is traditional Catholicism?

What ar its limits or characteristics?

Who decides?

Can only Latin Catholic be traditional?

Discuss.

On Traditional Catholics, by “WhollyRoamin’Catholic”. This is really good. 🙂

Yes, the Orthodox can be traditional, too if they’re concerned with keeping the devotions and practices that’ve been handed down to them. I’ve “met” Latin rite trads (online) who’ve ended up switching over to Orthodox churches when they couldn’t find a traditional RC church in their area.

Why the jump to Orthodox? I think the question is whether or not Catholics that are not members of the Latin Church can also be considered “traditional”.

My answer is yes but it is different.

Some of what is traditional for us Byzantine Catholics is innovation and non-traditional for Latin Catholics, such as a married secular clergy.

One of the solutions to this issue would be to rename this thread to Traditional Latin Catholic forum as we already do have an Eastern Catholic forum.

Actually if anyone actually reads what the description of this forum itself is they would already know what the purpose of this forum is… For those who insist on bringing in elements other than Traditional Roman Church ideas here is the description of the forum verbatim.

Forum for discussion of traditional Roman Catholic spirituality.

You will note it does not say traditional catholic spirituality. It does not say traditional orthodox spirituality. It specifically is intended for discussions of the Traditional Roman Church and it’s spitituality…

Yet certain posters, mostly of either Orthodox or protestant leanings and in some cases Catholics those who find fault in traditional Roman Catholicism due to liberal and modernist leanings continually jump in either bashing the Traditional Roman Church or trying to prove in different ways that their own beliefs are superior and hence correct.

Right, it says that in the notes but who really reads the notes. A name change to Traditional Roman Catholic Spirituality would be a good compromise.

What is traditional Catholicism?

A Catholic who practices tradition- traditional form of sacraments. As for beliefs, this cannot be either “trad” or “non-trad”, because everyone is bound by the same truths regardless of where one goes to Mass/Divine Liturgy.

What are its limits or characteristics?

Being in communion with the Holy Father is its limit

Who decides?

The Pope

To me, it doesn’t seem as if Eastern Catholic traditionalism is entirely necessary; Eastern Catholics did not have a total liturgical collapse, nor did they lose their Divine Liturgy. If anything, Eastern Catholic liturgy has improved in the last 40 years, becoming more authentically Eastern. That’s certainly not true across the board (Maronites seem to be in the same boat as Latins), but from what I have seen of Eastern Rite churches the situation seems to be pretty good.

The boat (I’d call it more of a “leaky canoe”) the Maronite Church is in is a bad copy of the one in which the Roman Church finds itself. There is little hope of stemming the liturgical collapse; it just gets worse by the day. From what I understand, (and I have no first-hand knowledge of this), the Syro-Malabar Church is in a similar situation. I am also told that the Armenian Church has some issues of its own, but again, I have no first-hand experience with it.

On the positive side, though, the Chaldean Church was similarly affected, but seems to have made great strides in getting itself out of that mess.

I would hope that at least some people knew the purpose of the forum to which they were writing.

I don’t go up on the Eastern Forums and rant about the superiority of the Roman Rite and the relative merits of the Roman Rite vs the Orthodox Rites nor would I ever presume to do so. Ditto for forums dealing with non Catholic issues. And in that sense I fail to see why so many of the Orthodox persuasion feel it to be almost a mission to educate us apparent knuckle draggers of the Roman Rite as to the superiority and antiquity of the various eastern beliefs and liturgies. Particularly when some of their beliefs are at direct odds with what Roman Catholicism, particulary traditional Roman Catholicism teaches and believes.

Warning!
This is the Traditional Catholicism forum. It is intended for the discussion of traditional Catholicism not the practices of the Church today. It is intended for traditional Catholics.
Non-traditional Catholics, Catholics of other rites, and non-Catholics are welcome to participate in the TC forum, however, they will not be allowed to dominate conversations or to push agendas which are not in keeping with the purpose of this forum.
Above all, civility and charity are to be observed at all times.
I am not going to quibble over semantics or parse words. I have had more than enough of those types of posts for the last three weeks. Traditional Catholicism relates to those practices/beliefs/liturgies, etc. that apply to the Latin Rite Catholic Church as it existed before the First Sunday of Advent in 1969 and as such survives today. If the choice of terms is “offensive” and you are going to base your comments solely upon the definition of “traditional Catholicism” then do not read this forum or comment on this forum.

I was not asking about “traditional Catholicism” as these words apply to this list, but the general meaning. Doubtless, I should have clarified that.

**This is an example of the “Get back to your Eastern ghetto” that many–not only I–have been told.

And this site is not the only place I’ve seen this attitude.**
