Very curious how some Catholics may differ on ideas of gov’t. Please vote. If the choice is not represented, please reply with your thoughts. Or even if you vote on something, please share your thoughts.

I think most forms of government can work properly.*

It is mainly a question of prudence given the circumstances and social situation a country is dealing with that determines the best form of government, IMO. Can the American form of government work here? I think it can, and quite well. However, we sometimes approach the point where it is necessary to consider a new form of government. I am not sure I trust the American people to govern themselves at the moment. A republic such as ours can work, but only if the people inhabiting it are of solid, consistent moral weight.

I do not think monarchy is the “best” form of government like some trads do. I think it can work well, but it is not a be all end all of government. I will answer your poll question based on what I think is best for the USA going into the future.

I define as being “able to work properly”:
  1. Economic responsibility.
  2. Absolute respect for Catholic moral teaching, whether the country is Catholic or not.

I have a question about the results so far. How many of the respondants are from Canada or the UK? How many are from the US?
Unless only US residents are allowed in this poll, it is not valid for the USA.
If the majority of US residents are for a monarchy in any form, I am appalled. Either these people are rebelious adolescents, sandbagging this poll, or they are people who are abysmally ignorant of US history and traditions. Thousands of people sacrificed their lives in two wars in order that our country did not have a monarch.
If this response is truely from Americans, it makes me regret the 16 years I spent defending the country in the US Navy!

Very true didnt think of that

personally I like the system we have up here.

a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy, Guess I’m a bit of a loyalist.

personally I like the separation we have between the head of state and the head of government.

The monarchies of pagan Europe show that monarchy is no friend of Catholicism.

I don’t give two hoots about my country’s recent political history if our own government is only spiraling towards anti-Catholic bigotry, oppression, and violence, ideological and otherwise. I am no longer certain that our “way” is good. That makes no judgement on our past. I am, on the other hand, fully proud of our country’s military, having grown up in that environment.

I am 19, and I am no America-hater. I have thought about these things for several years now, and I have mellowed out a bit. I am no rebellious adolescent, nor am I sandbagging. I am fully aware of US history and traditions, and I am proud of a large portion of it. I am not, however, proud of where we are now, nor am I proud of where we are going, and I think it is worth considering whether our current governmental system can be administrated and run competently and morally. Our government and our culture have always been closely linked. If one rots, the other soon follows.

How can you expect the above if a country is not Catholic?
Hm, it seemed to work for us American Catholics for a while. Even when there was widespread cultural bigotry towards Catholics, we at least knew who our haters were, and everyone else knew it, too. It was recognized and given credence. Now, our government is out for us, whether intentionally or not, and that is more insidious. If anyone says that, he’s ridiculed and told to “shut up, you wacko!”

The “democracy” of modern day USA shows that it is no friend of Catholicism.

Just kidding. To repeat what I said earlier, most (but not all) governmental systems can work well. I firmly believe that. Bad examples do not necessary prove anything. A sustained trend would, however, I think.

republic (yes form of democracy but different)

the USA isn’t a democracy but rather a republic, the citizens elects representatives to vote for them, so that all citizens don’t have to vote on every single thing. While I think our system of Gov in the USA isn’t the best I think a different variation of a republic would be the best “Catholic Government” just a little more strict rules as far as basic rights go. Maybe have some laws that can’t be amended like you can’t amend right to life, only way you can lose it is by trial by your peers. right to life would extend to conception or fertilization (for the scientist) and would always go to natural death.

republic…
Yep. The USA is a republic.

Democracies are generally not the best form of government unless you have a very small country. Democracy can work for cities or other smaller governmental entities. But not so great for a nation as big as the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, or whatever other countries are represented here at CAF.

Democratic republic (USA). I think it is the best form of government, although even that can be messed up, as we have seen.

Thank you for your service, sir.

I am not a monarchist but the current government is one that is “abysmally ignorant of US history and traditions,” otherwise they would not trample of the Constitution you risked your life to defend.

This country’s days are numbered – our own gov’t will run it into the ground. If people want to speculate about the next best form of gov’t they’re just being prepared to rebuild, IMO.

God bless,

I agree with this 100%. I think it is inevitable that we go the way of the Roman Empire. It will take time but it is a done deal. No country that allows the wholesale slaughter of it’s most vulnerable citizens can last. The culture of personal responsibility, work ethic and Christian based values is long long gone in the US. The 50’s are never coming back.

This can be seen as pessimism, but I am hopeful because I am a Christian and Christianity transcends nationalism. God is forever, this country is not, scripture tells us this clearly. No principality or power is going to last forever, only the kingdom of God.

A couple of the guys in my bible study are really hurting right now. They own businesses and they pine for the “good old days” when young people wanted to work and the US led the world by it’s values etc etc… They believe the US leads the way in morality around the world and we must ensure that we stay in power.
This is a strange mix of Christianity and nationalism that I just don’t get.

I am so sick and tired of people saying the United States is a democracy. It ain’t so. The United States is a Constitutional Republic with Individual Rights.

Under the scenario of the U.S. being a democracy, hypothetically speaking, one could have, say, ten identical houses on a neighborhood street with one exception. That exception would be that one of those houses has a swimming pool while the others do not. In a democracy, the owners of those other nine houses could take a vote and pass a law saying that they could go swimming in that swimming pool. Too bad for the owner of the swimming pool.

Too simplistic a scenario? Take a look at your pay stub a check out who has been swimming there.
