To all who have left suggestions thank you so much! I find mortification to be about gratitude. If you deny yourself some worldly pleasure or simple convenience, you will come to reap the benefits in time, whether they be spiritual or not.

It isn’t just physical harm to be concerned about, but more importantly, spiritual harm. Talk to a wise confessor who knows your soul and ask him for suggestions about what you need to mortify.

A decently unpleasant (but still fairly benign) mortification would be to forego your daily coffee/tea/caffeine supplement (if you have a daily habit/supplement with caffeine on a daily basis).

The only downside to this is that you will in all likelihood feel very sluggish, and you’ll lose the beneficial properties the caffeine would provide (the hypothermic effect it has on the body, for example).

Then again, you could consider these things to be an addition to the extant mortification of not having the caffeine in the first place… 🤷
Beat me, scourge me, excommunicate me, give me a million years in Purgatory…

I will NEVER give up coffee, EVER!!!

Thank you! I’m excited for Easter and I requested a Catechism book to study over the summer to be prepared when November comes. My largest problem is hurdling into things too fast… I’m working on impluse control 😃
There you have it sweetheart. Take your time and let Jesus gently enter into your heart. As a convert myself, the beauty of the Church opens a new door closer to Jesus every day.

It would be advisable to get a spiritual director who is holy who gives you permission what penances to do or not do.
This way the bad spirit cannot make you do a sacrafice that could harm your health or earthly mission

Wedn and Fri were the days the original early church fasted. And they went on bread and water. And eucharist fast was from midnight.

The OP was not asking about ideas for disordered - extreme - self - torture…

Coffee…🙂

Thank you for the gentle inspiration. Jesus is good and pure and I know that we are all worthy of Him. I am willing to enter into a loving relationship with the Lamb. Pacem.

Because most people find nestling their head into that nice soft pillow to be a source of bodily pleasure.

Sleeping without it removes that bodily comfort, which is exactly what a physical mortification is supposed to be.

Yes. This is exactly correct.

There is another need for pillows. I have to deal with sleep apnea. Pillows are necessary to elevate the head which is important to help alleviate the problems associated with sleep apnea.

In this case, sleeping without your pillow would go beyond a “harmless mortification” since it could endanger your life by interfering with respiration. But for the majority of people a pillow is purely a source of comfort.

I know. I was just being difficult.

I have one that is on the level of true mortification. I try to do it every morning, but it’s hard.

When the alarm goes off, get up. No snoozing. Get up. It’s one of the hardest things to do.

And, just like Michael the Archangel, say, “I will serve.”
