I am in the process of learning to serve the EF Mass. I am busy learning the Latin responses. Do you have any tips on how to memorise them? Do you know of any good resources on how to serve the EF Mass?

Fantastic! Thank you very much for the book recommendation and the website. They are both exactly what I was looking for. Now I just need to start memorising the responses etc…

Tip for memorizing: write it down a bunch of times. As much as needed.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll start doing that. I’ve been to Holy Mass (EF) hundreds of times but I never realised how much the altar servers did and how much they had to learn. The EF Mass is definitely a labour of love.

Just use a small missal, or laminate a card with the responses. I prefer the missal b/c I like to follow along with the priest.

God Bless

Do you use your missal when you are serving at the Altar? I use mine when I’m sitting in the pews but I don’t think it would be possible to use it when I’m serving at Mass.

Daily missals are awkward for serving. Even a little missalette with just the ordinary is awkward, and some priests don’t like it because it doesn’t look as good. If the priest lets you, by all means use it, but in my opinion it’s better to memorize the responses and look at the scriptures before or after Mass. That way, if you forget your missal one day or serve for a different priest, you’ll be all set.

Most servers when they are setting up for Mass set out papers or missalettes for themselves for the EF Mass as I’ve noticed that going on. I have no idea how many memorize responses unless they serve a great deal. I know a few of the responses for the congregation (or servers) but there are too many to know.

Aren’t the responses for the servers typically always about the same? Maybe I’m wrong, but that was my impression.

The responses are the same. They are Latin and the server must know them by heart. I am currently memorising them so that I can serve my weekly low Mass

I second those who say www.sanctamissa.org. I learnt how to serve the Old Rite using this most valuable resource a few years ago. The videos for learning how to serve at the altar are excellent and well worth your time. God bless.

livemass.net/LiveMass/dailyHD.html - You can watch the Low Mass here every day (over and over if you’d like)

Also they have the daily missal here divinumofficium.com/cgi-bin/missa/missa.pl

You can use these to help memorize all of the responses/read them over and over again until you do. Of course half the battle is memorizing them well enough that you can just say them at a high pace without having to think about it. I actually want to memorize the responses as well just for the sake of knowing them. I’ve noticed that I tend to memorize Latin prayers fairly quickly, but not everyone is the same.
