Traditional Latin Mass at “Miracle Church” in St. Louis, Missouri
9:00 am (CDT), Saturday, July 27, 2008.

For the first time since the implementation of the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council, Holy Mass was celebrated according to the 1962 Missale Romanum on Mary’s Altar at the historic Shrine of St. Joseph near downtown St. Louis, Missouri. The celebrant was Fr. Martin O’Keefe, S.J., a Latin scholar of the Institute of Jesuit Sources. About thirty persons attended, including the young and old, men and women.

For several years, Fr. O’Keefe has been offering the the traditional Latin Mass on Sundays in The Old Log Church at Holy Family Parish in Cahokia, Illinois. More recently, he has been doing so at 10:00am on Sundays in the first-floor chapel of Jesuit Hall, across from SLU on Lindell Blvd. A couple of months ago, the aging rector of the Shrine of St. Joseph, Fr. Valentine Young, O.F.M., suffered an injury and subsequently Fr. Brian Van Hove, S.J., was appointed to fill the post. After consulting with the lay board which has overseen the care and restoration of the Shrine since the late 1970s, Fr. Van Hove invited Fr. O’Keefe and the regular patrons of his weekly Latin Mass to move their operation to the Shrine. The current plan and hope is to have Mass offered there, in the extraordinary form, every Sunday at 9:00am. Fr. Van Hove will continue to celebrate Mass in the ordinary form every Sunday at 11:00am. [The old Latin Mass was indeed offered there again at 9am this past Sunday, Aug. 3.]

For those unfamiliar with the Shrine of St. Joseph: it was originally built as a parish church in 1843 to serve the local German immigrant population. The parish later became famous for a miraculous healing which took place there in 1861, attributed to the heavenly intercession of a 17th-Century Jesuit priest and missionary, Peter Claver. The healing was investigated by the Holy See and declared authentic in 1887, paving the way for the Saint’s canonization in 1888. The Shrine still possesses two first class relics of St. Peter Claver, which may be venerated every Sunday and upon request by visitors. The Shrine’s magnificent central altar, dedicated to St. Joseph, is known as the Altar of Answered Prayers: it “is the result of a pledge made by grateful parishioners who made a promise to St. Joseph. The altar became known as ‘The Altar of Answered Prayers’ because of St. Joseph’s intercession in the midst of a cholera epidemic in 1866. [According to the belief of the church’s then parishioners, it was] because of St. Joseph’s intercession [that] their families were spared [from the deadly sickness].” According to parish archives kept at the Shrine, “not one member of all the families who had signed the vow and the pledge [to build a monument to St. Joseph] was stricken with cholera after that day.” During the latter half of the last century, the Shrine began to fall into disrepair, and by the early 1970s it was slated for demolition. The elderly priest assigned to the Shrine, Fr. Filipiak, together with some laymen enthusiastic about its preservation, worked hard to have the Shrine placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and their efforts succeeded in 1978. Renovation efforts were galvanized in 1979 when Fr. Filipiak was brutally murdered in the rectory by two young burglars. The restoration work has continued apace since that tragic day, and today the interior is stunningly beautiful, the organ is in regular operation, and the bell towers are once again ringing the praises of Almighty God.

If you live in or are visiting the St. Louis area, please come worship at this historic church on Sundays at 9am (Latin Mass, extraordinary form) or 11am (English, ordinary form) – free tours are available every Sunday following the 11am Mass. Or you can call or send an e-mail to schedule a tour at other times during the week.

Thanks for posting this info. 🙂

I’ll include the priests named in my prayers.

Welcome to CA.

Wonderful news! Praised by Jesus Christ.
You have probably already heard the news: ?Archbishop Burke will soon be leaving Missouri:

"In his new position, Archbishop Burke will serve as the head of the Church’s supreme tribunal, which ensures that justice is correctly administered.

Also known as the Church’s Supreme Court, the Tribunal also oversees the administration of justice within the Church, examining administrative matters referred to it by the Congregations of the Roman Curia, as well as questions committed to it by the Holy Father."

Yes, I had head this awhile ago. This is great news for the universal Church, but a loss for us here in the U.S.

Burke is one of the few very good bishops we have. He is will be sorely missed.

Saw a program on the shrine and it’s restoration a while back.

Can’t think of a more beautiful or fitting place for the EF than that.

James

. . . Holy Mass was celebrated according to the 1962 Missale Romanum on Mary’s Altar at the historic Shrine of St. Joseph near downtown St. Louis, Missouri . . .
Here is a picture from the Shrine’s website of “Mary’s Altar”, mentioned above:

Just beautiful 🙂 .

O Mary, my Queen and my Mother, I give myself entirely to thee, and to show my devotion to thee I consecrate to thee this day: my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Therefore good mother, as I am thy own, keep me and guard me as thy property and possession. Amen.

Here’s a shot of the right side altar, the “Jesuit’s Altar”:

All you Jesuit saints and martyrs, great and small, known and unknown, pray for us!

Receive, O Lord, all my liberty. Take my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. Whatsoever I have or hold, Thou hast given to me; I give it all back to Thee and commit it wholly to be governed by thy will. Thy love and thy grace give unto me, and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more. Amen.
-- St. Ignatius of Loyola

And of course, the most impressive of all is the central altar, dedicated in a special way to St. Joseph, most chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, O Poor Family of Nazareth, save souls!

Remember, O most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph my beloved patron, that never has it been heard that anyone invoked thy patronage and sought thine aid without being comforted. Inspired by this confidence, I come to thee and fervently commend myself to thee. Ah, despise not my petition, dear Foster Father of our Redeemer, but accept it graciously. Amen.

Please come visit the Shrine – make a modern day pilgrimage in honor of St. Joseph and the preservation and restoration and appreciation of “the Sacred” in our Church, which has been so disturbed in recent decades by institutional collapse at many levels and by a modern day iconoclasm.

I am right now looking at EWTN’s presentation re this miraculous church and I am blest to see this program as it touched my heart. Yes, I do believe…
