Traditional Latin Mass Tutorial & References

I was wondering if there were any good websites for reference regarding the Traditional Latin Mass.

I wanted to know more about how to follow along for the mass (Low Mass, High Mass).

Questions like:

1. What does the order of the mass indicate? (Single, Double; White, Red)
2. What is the Secret Prayer?
3. What is the Collect Prayer"
4. When do you pray the Saint’s Feasts prayers? In which order related to the Sunday prayers?
5. Definitions (Proper, Intriot…etc)
6. During mass do you pray reading the Latin or English?
7. When there’s a cross (+) in the missal, do you make the sign of the cross? or genuflect?

Also, how else can you fully utilize the Roman Latin Missal? I have the 1945 Father Lasance “The New Roman Missal”

This can help you set up your missal by showing you what will be prayed today.

During mass do you pray reading the Latin or English?

I do a bit of both.

When there’s a cross (+) in the missal, do you make the sign of the cross? or genuflect?

I think that means to make the sign of the cross. In my 1962 Angelus Press missal, it tells me when to genuflect.

Also, how else can you fully utilize the Roman Latin Missal? I have the 1945 Father Lasance “The New Roman Missal”

I’m not sure what you mean by “fully utilize”, but while I’ve heard of Fr. Lasance’s missal, I’ve never looked through it, so I don’t think I can help.

It didn’t seem to cover things like what is the meaning of Single, Double, White, Red masses? Are there special prayers depending on the mass type?

I’m not sure what you mean by “fully utilize”, but while I’ve heard of Fr. Lasance’s missal, I’ve never looked through it, so I don’t think I can help.

I guess what I mean is that there are many other kinds of prayers towards the end of the missal. I wonder if most people use these prayers on a daily basis?

I’ve never heard of single/double Masses. It might be talking about low and high Masses, which is a difference in solemnity. There is more going on in a High Mass than a Low Mass, and even more in a Solemn High Mass then a Sung High Mass.

If red/white Mass isn’t referring to the colors the priest is supposed to wear, a Red Mass is said for lawyers/those in the legal profession and a White Mass is said for those in medicine.

NOTE: except with a few exceptions, the Traditional Latin Mass that is typically used is the one uses in 1962.

So there are a few minor differences. For example the double and single are gone, and simply replaced by Class 1, 2, 3, 4

This Wikipedia page does a good job of explaining this and has a table so you can see the difference between today and in times past

No, this was the terms used before Pope John XXIII. I posted a Wikipedia page that has a table and shows the difference

In the 1962 missal, the following colors are used: WHITE, RED, VIOLET, ROSE, GREEN, BLACK

NOTE: there are also some liturgical days (where the clergy change vestments during the celebration: Easter Vigil & Palm Sunday are examples)

This Wikipedia page shows the current color scheme, as well as the color schemes introduced in the 1920, 1956, & 1961

Since the missal you are looking at is from the 1940s, it would follow the 1920 version, while the vast majority of Traditional Latin masses would follow the 1961 color scheme.

Your missal may or not help you, depending on where you go to Mass. I think that most of the Latin Masses are celebrated using the 1962 missal. While your missal isn’t bad, it may have prayers, rubrics and a calendar that won’t match with what is going on at a particular Mass. For someone starting out I would recommend getting a copy of the 1962 missal (I have a new one from Angelus Press that I like). I used the card from Baronius Press, [“A Guide to When to Sit, Stand and Kneel”] (Baronius Press: Daily Missal 1962 for use with the Traditional Latin Mass (Tridentine Rite).) to mark in my missal when to do what.
