Traditional Mass from WW2

Here the men are willing to kneel on the dirty ground (might be mud) but I fail to see people to kneel on a clean floor nowadays…
 
I remember attending Mass aboard the USS Rainier (AE-5), an Ammunition Ship, in the mid 1960’s off the coast of Viet Nam. Mass was said in the open air atop a cargo hatch. The altar was a couple of wooden boards between two oil drums. It was celebrated by Father John O’Connor, who was to becom Cardinal Archbishop of New York.

I love these pictures! My father was in the Phillipines during WWII and he was an altar boy for their chaplain. He said he set up the altar on the jeep many times a day. I have the pictures but I don’y know how to get them on here. Thanks for sending this picture!

As a wife of a soldier who has been at war ,I am moved to tears by the OP’s picture and all the stories. You have no idea the solace it brought me to know that my husband could still receive the blessed sacrament because of the brave service of the military chaplains. Please pray for them because we are in a battle with politics in the military since the government would like to force them perform same sex union services if a soldier requests it. This among other things is why Archbishop Timothy Broglio has sent out a prayer card, on the front of which is a picture of Holy mass celebrated on a makeshift alter using rations boxes in Afghanistan. You can find out more about the Archdiocese for the military at www.milarch.org .Part of it reads " Almighty God and Father… Bless and multiply the priests who minister to the faithful of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, reward their generosity and keep them faithful…Through Christ our Lord." Amen

I read in a magazine a few years ago (sorry, don’t have the reference) about an Allied soldier who served Mass for a priest with no server, in Europe some time near the end of WWII. It was only when the priest took his vestments off after Mass that the Allied soldier saw that the priest was wearing a German army uniform, he was a chaplain for the German army. The German army chaplain thanked the Allied soldier politely and they went their separate ways. Pity I don’t have a reference for it!

The vestments hid the uniform, the language (Latin) masked the nationality. Ooops. did i just mention that?!? ProVobis might do a cartwheel. 😃

I find it extremely difficult to believe that the Nazi armed forces would openly allow a Catholic Priest to operate in their ranks as chaplain.

Based on what I know about Nazi persection of Catholics, and in light of Nazi support of the Spanish persection of the Church during the Spanish civil war during which Churches were burned and priests were murdered, I would think that a Catholic priest would have been placed in a concentration camp rather than made chaplain.

Blessed Pope John Paul II went to seminary during Nazi occupation of Poland, during which time the Catholic Church was explicitely outlawed. He had to sneak through the city at night to attend classes and risked getting shot for doing so.

The martyr, Franciscan and priest St. Maxamillian Kolbe who died in a Nazi concentration camp notwithstanding, I would like to see the article, because I have serious doubts about the existence of a Catholic army chaplain in the Nazi armed forces during World War II.

I believe that he/she was VERY serious. Sheesh…you would deny men in the field the very bread of life that sustains us all? I am so happy that we had men (priests) willing to serve our fighting men in this way. Truly saints on earth!

Why would anyone here, upon seeing a picture of the Holy Sacrifice (not only of Jesus, but of our own brothers/fathers/uncles/friends in/near mortal combat) make a joke??

Would not anyone who made a joke upon viewing a picture of a reverent mass in a beautiful church building be pummeled to a pulp by other posters here for doing so?

I feel this joke was sadly unfortunate and in very poor taste.

Here’s an image I just found by typing into Google images “WWII Catholic Mass.” Notion the wounded soldier (?) in the foreground. It’s VERY moving.

I think you’re misreading the joke, Big Feet. TempleServant wasn’t joking about the Mass or the soldiers’ sacrifices, but the “liberals” who may easily say that this proves a Mass doesn’t need to be on an altar. If a liberal Catholic, who doesn’t care about the liturgical rules, had his way, then they may want to have the Mass on everything from a sofa chair to a toaster!

TempleServant was mocking the liberals, not the Mass.
