"Traditional" OF Wedding Mass Ideas?

So I recently got engaged and while we haven’t set the date yet, I’m already thinking about the wedding Mass (the most important part! :p). I got shot down by my fianceé with having an EF Mass, but I figure as long as I can get the priest to agree to other things I can at least have a very traditional OF wedding Mass. The question is what can I to do?

I assume everything on my list is acceptable and is up to the priest who is performing the Mass. Anyway here’s a few things I want to have. If anyone else has other ideas let me know 👍.

Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei in Latin.

Gospel - Chanted in English

Incense used throughout the Mass

It would be nice to have everyone kneel for Communion and receive on the tongue if possible.

I would love some Latin hymns.
Maybe something like:
Offertory Hymn: Panis Angelicus
Communion Hymn: Adoro Te Devote & Ave Verum Corpus

Not sure about the others

Any other ideas?
 
Each Form of the Mass has its own rubrics. Admittedly, the OF is considerable more “liberal” in its rubrics than the EF. I would consult your priest to gather ideas and to see what is allowed.
 
You could also have the Confiteor recited and the Kyrie then sung.

You could have the proper antiphons for the Nuptial Mass chanted, in English or in Latin, at the entrance, gradual (which would be in place of the Responsorial Psalm), Alleuia, offertory and communion.

You could have the intercessions sung.
 
When my husband and I got married in 1983 we asked the priest if we could have some parts of the Mass in Latin. We also were fortunate to have the parish choir sing for us (I had been a member.) They sang “Ave Verum” for the Offertory, the Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and “Panis Angelicus” for the Communion. It was very nice, and we even received compliments from guests, later.
I’d suggest to go easy on the incense, however. There might be guests in the congregation who have breathing problems.

One has to ask, does your parish do any of those things on even a semi-regular basis? Because if I wanted most of those in MY parish I’d have to import a priest and a choir from another diocese.

Before you go in with your “want” list, figure out where you’re likely to get married and then check out what the parish is like.

As far as the Gospel being chanted, you need a priest or a deacon who can sing and wants to do this. That narrows your options considerably.

I don’t think you can dictate what Penitential Rite the priest opts for.
 
All good suggestions from other posters. Chanted Entrance Antiphon, Kyrie, Gloria, Responsorial Psalm (English), Alleluia, Sanctus, Amen, Agnus Dei, and Communion Antiphon. Latin hymns for offertory and Communion. Gospel would depend on whether the priest can and is willing to chant it.

Would be good to have enough well-trained altarservers too. Thurifer and two candlebearers at least. You can have torchbearers during the consecration.

You can have kneelers for Communion but you can’t force people to receive kneeling or on the tongue.

In many cultures, it’s traditional for the bride to place flowers at a statue of the Virgin after Communion. If you include that, it’s a good time for a Marian hymn.

The OP already granted the assumption that the Pastor would have to be willing to do it; the question is, “What are some things I could ask for?” Besides, priests that I know generally are unconcerned about such things as which penitential rite to use for a wedding; if the couple wants X, Y, and Z, they will usually accommodate as long as it is a legitimate option (and a lot of times even if it isn’t).

I like the ideas!! 👍 Make Sure the Parish You have in mind is willing to do this. If not, You will have to find another one. I would also make sure that the Church is “old fashioned” in architecture. When chanting happens, nothing beats that “otherwordly” echo and acoustics of a vast and open Church. I LOVE the EF, however, IMO, The Most beautiful Liturgy is the OF done in Latin and chant. Since it is Your Wedding, I would make the MASS the most beautiful part of the ceremonies. Nothing can beat “sealing” Your Marriage by recieving JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF. That is the “Definitive” stamp on Your Marriage!! 👍
 
Will you be able to hire a choir for the MASS? If so, I have some ideas of some Chants for the MASS.
 
There’s not just the question of whether the priest is prepared, but whether there is an able choir (or singers) who are able to take the lead in the Latin orders and hymns. You should also seek out singers who have the ability to sing Latin hymns and orders. The priest may be able to intone “Gloria in excelsis Deo”, but unless he’s well-versed in the Latin OF (or trained in the EF), you can’t expect him to follow through on all the Latin prayers. Either way, even if you had a traditionally-minded priest to celebrate the OF rite, you should still be mindful of your choice of choir.

I’m not aware of the proper antiphons for a Matrimonial Mass, but if anybody can enlighten me, please do. 🙂

Yes, you dont want to have your guest have a really bad experience.

Some of us have BAD allergies or asthma. So dont go heavy.

😃 It always amazes me that in the East and Orient, where one normally expects (and usually gets) clouds of incense at most services, it’s exceedingly rare to hear complaints of this nature. 🤷 The most common complaint I’ve heard (and even from clergy) is that the incense used was sub-standard, and did not deliver a fragrant smoke. :eek: 🙂

Well I dont know if it was sub-standard incense or what, but when I came into full communion at the Easter Vigil of '07, I had such a profound migraine from the incense, that I wasnt able to really focus on the liturgy at all, or even when I was confirmed or took the Eucharist for the first time.

The pain was that distracting, nay, overwhelming…

That is why I suggest that if the OP wants to use incense, tread lightly in case there are those of their guests who have a reaction to the incense. All they may remember is the pain and the discomfort.

I envy those who have no idea of what it’s like. That kind of “have no clue cause I have never experienced it”. 🙂
 
I am so far encouraged since the priest that I’m hoping to have do the Mass is younger and seems to be a bit more traditional minded. We’ll see though. Thanks for the suggestions :D.

One thing I wish I could have is a full Rosary before the Mass (prior to the bride arriving). I don’t think there would be enough time for that though :o.
