You go to Mass to be with God. The rest is just bonus.

Isn’t this the “personal relationship” heresy Evangelicals float around these days? We are never solitary in the Church. Love of God and love of neighbor always goes hand in hand, you can’t do one without doing the other.

I tend to doubt that there are. Insofar as a parish is concerned, religious priests are subject to the bishop and whatever norms are established. Orders and congregations of Pontifical Right are exempt from that, (as they are from the jurisdiction of the local bishop in general), but only within their own communities. All territorial parishes (and even, I believe, “personal parishes”) are ipso-facto under the local bishop, irrespective of whether they are in the charge of an exempt Order or congregation.

The Catholic parishes which may not be subject to the local Roman Church bishop include:

• those few personal parishes of an Eastern Rite Church committed to the care of a different Eastern Rite Church.
• parishes of a Church of an Eastern Rite which have their own territorial bishop (eparch) or exarch.
• parishes of a military ordinariate. They are under the ordinary of their ordinariate; US it’s Archbishop Broglio, in Canada MGen Bishop Theriault
• parishes of any personal vicariate apostolic (which includes military ordinariates without diocesan status, and some other special cases)
• parishes of the Anglican Ordinariate. (it’s not up and running yet in the US, but will be next year. England’s is running now! See Anglicorum Coetibus, 2010, for details.)
• Oratories and chapels of papal and (eastern church) patriarchal rite orders. They are under their superiors general, provincials, abbots, archimandrites, or other equivalent ordinary, unless their rule subjects them to the local bishop. Note that parishes that they staff are subject to the local bishop, but they themselves are still under their own ordinary.
