Hello all,

I’m a core leader with Life Teen at my church. On Palm Sunday, I will be leading a night about the crucifixion. I’m planning on closing the night with Adoration for the teens, and I want to play some traditional, requiem-like hymns during it.

When I say “traditional,” I mean Latin lyrics, goose bumps all around. For example, I’ve already selected Faure and Mozart’s Requiem. But can you all recommend any other compositions which are similar to these?

Thanks so much for your help!

Don’t forget to include some silence as well. Jesus needs to get a word in edgewise.

Have you listened to the Requiem by Maurice Durufle? Gorgeous.

Requiem music might not be the most appropriate; for one, we know that Christ will resurrect on the 3d day. Requiem music is more about hope for the deceased.

I would instead recommend a couple of good Gregorian hymns (that happen to be very beautiful as well) that are related to the Cross.

My first choice would be Vexilla Regis

Also, Pange lingua gloriosi certaminis

Both were attributed to Venantius Fortunatus in the 6th century and are most appropriate for Passiontide. They are both also currently used in the Divine Office for Holy Week, the former at Vespers and the latter split into two parts for Vigils and Lauds and also chanted at the Good Friday service.

Note that this is not the same Pange lingua attributed to St. Thomas d’Aquinas and used for Corpus Christi, though he was inspired by the Fortunatus hymn.
