Hello

I am at a quandary in my vocations process. I am looking for an order of men that serve the poor yet celebrate the EF at least more often than not at all. Does anyone know of anything that is in communion with the Holy See? I realize these two callings limit my options, and that’s alright with me, but I don’t think God wants me to give up on one for the sake of the other.

Thanks for your help!

Oh, I just saw the part about serving the poor. If you join the FSSP you are a diocesan priest I believe, you just get assigned particular parishes for exclusive use of the Tri-mass.
You know, any priest can say the 1962 mass without bishop approval. You just may not have the space to do it in. Don’t know how that affects you but keep looking, and good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t feel called to the parish route/secular priesthood. I do know under the provisions of Summorum Pontificum that any priest can say the Tridentine Mass w/o indult. That being said, the provisions for a community are different in that for the whole community to celebrate, it needs permission of the Superior, if my understanding of B16’s cover-letter to the Motu proprio is correct. That being said, do any priests in orders that don’t exclusively use TLM say it in private or with others?

Your vocation desire to serve the poor is indeed focused on a very Holy path; for our LORD declared “…whatsoever you do unto the least of my brethern, so you do unto ME…” paraphrase. And there are several examples of our LORD in diguise as a poor or ill person (St. Francis of Assisi kissing JESUS as a leper, St. Therese Leisux giving out the last loaf of bread to a JESUS as a begger in the snow) which HE chose to test several people who became saints.

However, I cannot find one example of our LORD declaring that the EF is the prefered “way” to HIM over any other Eucharistic celebration. HE needs loving people such as yourself to bring HIM to the poor. Let HIM worry about the Eucharistic process.

I wish you well in your search, and hope you can find both.

My brother, I pray that you will become a priest to minister God’s Grace through the sacraments! What a joyous call you have.

It might be to your advantage to read about the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate. Here is a vocational video put out by their office: youtube.com/watch?v=T7V3iYeZU0E . Everything they do is geared toward that most singular Rule of St. Francis, whose focus on the poor belongs to the highest echelons of Christian action. In addition to this great seraphic fire they have for Our Lord the Poor, they also use fiddleback chasubles and sing Latin praises before vernacular hymns (for the most part). They appear to offer the E.F. at least often enough that you will be satisfied.

Thank you, Glorious Order, for your exhortation and your link. I looked into the Franciscans of the Immaculate website, but couldn’t find anything mentioning work with the poor. Are you aware if they do or not? Thanks!

Well, knowing that one of the central tenets of St. Francis’ founded orders is consecration of our lives to the poor, I suppose I merely assumed it would be such. Naturally the 5 hours’ community prayer is very long compared to other Franciscan groups, but there is still plenty of time for the poor. The vocations video itself showed several scenes of these grey friars in African and Indian villages, handing out food (amongst other things). St. Francis always demanded a humbling of his friars down to the level of the poor and sick.

I suppose your conundrum of reconciling Traditionalism] with Alms will only be resolved through Franciscan or Vincentian means. European Franciscans tend to be much more traditional than American Franciscans, anyway. In the end, every Franciscan’s commitment to the poor is expected to be solemn, serious, and filled with great, joyous love. They are your avenue!

The only other avenue I can see is… founding a new Fraternity based totally on the E.F. and on Alms! It’s not exactly practical, of course. 😛 Either way, I am just a catechumen after all, so there are probably thousands of Catholics out there who are more knowledgeable than I am on this subject. Please do visit C.A.F.'s Vocations Forum too… they won’t mind a traditionalist preference for the E.F.!
