Hi. Would anyone know the difference between traditional and non traditional novenas? I was just going to buy a novena book on Amazon and one review was upset because there were no traditional novenas.
Made me curious about the difference. I tried to find the answer on the internet but couldn’t.
Thank you

Thank you. I’m just going to pick one without going crazy.😊

A Novena is simply prayer that is said in groups of 9.

Could be once an hour for 9 hours, once a day for 9 days, once a week for 9 weeks, etc.

As has been mentioned, a novena is usually just a prayer over 9 days (although there are other time periods based on 9 as well), based on the 9 days the Apostles prayed without ceasing between the Ascension and Pentecost.

I’m assuming by “traditional” is meant those whose texts have been around for a long time and have been popular for a while–many of which are tied to liturgical feast days of ancient saints–as compared to newer, lesser known compositions from more recent times.

If you google traditional novenas, you’ll find plenty. Obviously those related to more recently canonized saints–John Paul II, Mother Theresa, Padre Pio, etc.–are newer.

A good novena book should have the classics that have proven fruitful for a long time along with any new ones the editors think worthy.
