I have a question, I previously started attending mass at a SSPX church. Because they do not hold onto the validity of the regular sacraments, I was reconfirmed. I was wondering therefore which confirmation is the valid one?

A confirmation by an SSPX Bishop is valid but illicit. Therefore a re-confirmation is not necessary.

If you believe that the Traditional Rite of Confirmation should be used, than the second one (the one using the Traditional rite) is the correct one.

Says the Church. While Pope Francis has given some faculties back to priests in the SSPX, Confirmation is not one of the things he has grated permission for.

One’s beliefs in the matter are irrelevant. The teaching of the Church is relevant. If there were some defect, which affected validity, in the first Confirmation, recognized by the Church, then the SSPX Confirmation would be valid.

I didn’t realize that the SSPX taught that Confirmations performed by the church that they purport to be in communion with were not valid. That is very troubling.

So, now you are accusing the Church of the sins of pride and modernism?

How about you read the Vatican II document SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM. Maybe you should, as your answer lies there.

Can you refer me to a pre-VII document? Or are there only Post VII ones on the matter?

No, it doesn’t matter what “you” believe. The SSPX has no faculties to confirm. Accordingly Holy Mother Church gets to decide, NOT YOU. The SSPX confirmation is illicit.

But in a person not previously confirmed, Confirmation by an SSPX bishop would be valid, correct?

I was reconfirmed
No you weren’t. Like baptism, confirmation can only be received once.

You were confirmed in the Catholic Church. That confirmation was/is valid.

Therefore you could not receive confirmation a second time. It is not possible.

I encourage you to return to mass and the sacraments in the Catholic Church if you have not already ceased with the SSPX.

Well, since Vatican II reformed the Mass and the rite of Confirmation, sorry, that’s where you have to go.
The Church has continued on after 1950, you know. 😏

But why did they change? I’m just curious. I’m sure they have written about the reason somewhere.

Yes, in the document I linked above.
READ IT!!!

Then come back and discuss it. All your answers are there- it’s probably best to read all the VII documents, if you haven’t already.

That would be correct, valid but illicit.

However, no “reconfirmation” can ever be either.

Right. But on what basis do they state, as a general rule, that Confirmations performed in the new Rite are invalid? Are they performing a conditional confirmation? Or have they simply decided, on their own authority, that the new Rite is entirely defective?
