Traditions lost or discarded post-Vatican II?

Good post and even I have to agree that certain attitudes do not promote what they intend and it comes from both sides. I wish we could just let God work His wonders and not have these hostile camps among ourselves.
Your remember the change box going into the Church V-1, I think we use to donate 25 or 35 cents? I remember the box.

I attended Mass recently in the states(USA) and the Mass ,especially the wording of everything had changed so much, I felt lost, out of place, and a bit scared.

Again, I am puzzled as to why this thread is still here or not closed. I have brought up my frustrations on this same topic and found my thread closed or gone. I have mentioned I am a fish out of water and tried getting back into the fish bowl but felt it was like a saltwater tank and not freshwater. Lost…out of place…scared - terrified there was no church on earth left.
Good point; this is so true and the lack of communication has caused a distancing between trads and the modern Church. Although I must say, I have at times experienced a certain derision from the contemporary for the past as if to say the “old school” and pious devotions no longer have any meaning for us.
That lack of communication and acknowledgement/understanding that someone who was in the church in the past and trying to come back needs some encouragement that what they are trying to come back to is indeed ‘the church’. I have been met with such indifference and hostility on the part of rcia directors and busy overburdened deacons and secretaries and church staff whose job is to keep people from seeing or talking to a priest, that I just left indefinitely. It was such a foreign, hostile place for me, that the new practices, the lack of priests, sent me lost and dazed to the place I was in for 45 years, just me and Jesus. If it wasnt for my once anti-Catholic now newly illumined Catholic husband (think Scott Hahn) I would not be attending any church. He is directing my healing, back in an ancient church in communion with Rome.

Please pray for more priests and deacons.

Just this evening I was whining to my husband about behaviors in church. It seems that sanctity has grown out of favor. No one crosses themselves with holy water upon entering and exiting the church. Hardly anyone genuflects anymore. Everyone talks and laughs like they’re waiting for a movie to start. Used to be that you knelt for as long as the tabernacle was open. No one cares now. Some don’t even kneel after receiving the Eucharist. And the Leonine Prayers should definitely make a comeback. I’m seriously considering going to one of the Traditional churches in my area. It’s getting to be too much.
My parish has this same problem. I pretty much have to do my prayers and devotions before Mass now because of all the loud talking (and I mean LOUD) in the pews and the disrespect for others who are trying to actually pray and contemplate before Mass actually begins.I can understand that sometimes, there will be distractions. But to me, it feels like it’s no different from being in a movie theater (as you stated). Not to mention, the choir is often practicing singing/playing instruments before Mass starts.

I’ve been wanting to switch churches but this parish has been my “home” parish for most of my life, and it’s a convenient 5 minute drive. I realize that not every parish is perfect but there’s tons of liturgical abuses at my parish and it feels like attending a Protestant church. Some day I hope to explore the Extraordinary Form of the Mass or perhaps a Byzantine Catholic parish, despite how such liturgical forms feel “foreign” to me though beautiful.

I think one major Tradition lost is praying the Rosary. It’s sort of sad when I get non-Catholics or even non-religious who take such an interest in the Rosaries I make. There are a few Nominal Catholics I work with who claim they don’t need to pray, don’t have time for prayer (neither do I, working 12-13 shifts 5 days a week; but I still do make time for prayer), and could care less about Rosaries. I think the Rosary is a great devotion and tool to evangelize non-Catholics/non-religious with, but for some reason Nominal Catholics could care less. I’m not sure what’s going on with catechesis in our culture today.

I do understand. But we need to keep our focus on the Eucharistic Lord and not on others. The pain and frustration in our hearts must be given over to a greater cause (so to speak) and not be allowed to fester or lead us astray. A greater trust is needed here. I can attest to the fact that Our Lady herself presents our “condition” to her Son to be used for His own good purposes. And this is not to say we must not always defend the faith, but only that our own attitude must be pleasing to God.
Please pray for more priests and deacons.
Oh I do…every single day!

Yes…I had forgotten, but IIRC, it was a stipend for the votive candles we lit. The money was donated to the poor.

Fasting from Midnight until you received Communion. Only water was allowed unless you had a health issue. Not even coffee. Could be why the 10:15 mass was so popular.

I am sorry that has been your experience. I just wanted to let you know that it is not like that everywhere. My parish has a great devotion to the Blessed Mother. In fact all of the surrounding parishes do and I am in the Bible belt.

Teaching people the faith at a young age and doing it. I’m considered a genius at my youth group because I know most of the Virgin Mary apparitions, saints, how to say the rosary, Latin phrases, Bible, etc.

Fortunately the children s liturgy that I help at are taught the faith. Heck they know more than my youth group.

I guess a young traditionalist like me is a rarity.

This has been an interesting read. Things really do vary! At the parish I attend everyone, even young children genuflect or bow before entering a pew. It is pretty silent beforehand with a few whispers. It also seems that everyone makes the sign of the cross w/ the holy water entering and leaving.

I unfortunately must agree. So many threads vanish when ever tradition is mentioned. The real thread killer seems to be communion on the tongue vs. in the hand.

There was a tradition during the pre-Pope Paul Vi Latin Mass that one would strike ones chest with a closed fist and say “Lord have mercy” every time the chimes rang during the Consecration. No one seems to do this any more.
I still do this, even with the OF.

In my Parish we still say the prayers after Low Mass; The St. Michael the Archangel Prayer, etc, the Rosary is prayed each day before all of the morning Masses, the Angelus is prayed with bells rung daily, we have a daily Eucharistic Adoration chapel, bells are rung at Mass during the Consecration, we kneel at the Agnus Dei & we also strike our breasts at the “through my fault” of the Confiteor & bow our heads at the “and by the power of the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became Man”. We have First Friday & First Saturday devotions. We have Corpus Christie processions etc. We also have the Forty Hours devotions. I feel we have kept many of the Pre Vatican II practices alive. The one I miss is the praying of The Last Gospel; The Gospel of John after Sunday Mass.

They don’t have to remain lost, discarded, unfamiliar forever. With some initiative, perhaps we can restore these traditions and customs. We can’t change the past, but the future is a different story.
One tradition that is being restored is veiling. I have noticed over the past few months, I am seeing more heads covered - even pre-teens and teens. Now we do not live in a very traditional area (to say the least) and have no TLM in this diocese, so I was surprised at this and I began to ask those ladies I know why??

Their two dominant reasons for doing so were:

1.) To make reparation for the immodest dress at Mass, especially in the summer with tank tops and shorts.

2.) To atone for the casual attitude toward the Eucharist in the tabernacle, such as those who do not externally acknowledge Christ when coming into His presence.

Lo and behold, I found a recent article on this resurgence that said this phenomenon is gaining popularity even in places of “high” fashion. Even though I greatly dislike drawing attention to myself by being out of the norm, I have now been convicted to veil again because of both reasons. Note that two websites I went to for ordering showed several veils out of stock…so it must be true that this is, indeed, coming back.
