Religious powers that be: Catholicism East and West do not agree on a very basic point: authority. The East does not recognize the papacy as having authority over them. This schism is unrepaired for 1000 years so far. This raises a couple of obvious questions: Which one is right? Both cannot be right. Could both be wrong?
Eastern Catholicism agrees that the Papacy has authority over them. Eastern Orthodoxy does not. If you ask a Catholic, we’ll say we’re right. If you ask an Orthodox, they’ll say they’re right. Nobody, that I know, says they’re both right. There are discussions going on between the Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, so we’ll see where they go.

The Holy Father is meeting with the Patriarch of Kriliac (spelling) right at present moment, and the Patriarch can see that we need to be more united considering the way the rest of the world is going…

I just emailed a Fundamentalist from the South in regards to what can be done ASAP for our country.

The first thing I told him was that the Fundamentalists need to accept and learn Catholicism from our sources, to recognize that their form of Sola Scriptura has done the much damage to perception of Christianity in our country and in the world.

I hope James was not blown away…may be I was too personal, but he brought it up and I felt something of a pure soul about him from the get go…

I prayed alot for him last night and this morning…

Christine,

Here is the site: www.romeofthewest.com.

Today they are having St. Francis on…in Indiana near Chicago…

I received a letter from Rosalind a few years ago when I tried to form a Havurot. My former pastor thinks I should leave and go with her…

I caught that too. I have found that to be the case with many exCatholics. You handled it charitably. You’ve been there. You’re not going to let ANYTHING stand in the way of your relationship to Jesus.

I hope he hasn’t gone away either. I PM’d him, but haven’t hear back. Maybe I’ll email.

I usually pray before I post. You can tell when I haven’t!! (attack dog). 😛

This thread is straying from topic a lot - I hope it doesn’t get closed.

Yes, to get back on track. The word Baptist is a catch-all like the word Christian. There are dozens of groups called Baptist. There is no Baptist Denomination as such. Mostly, because true Baptists are not Protestant. Yes there are definite groups that have headquarters and central controls. I hasten to point out that many churches called Baptist are fiercely independent and answer to no one outside their local body. This is not about the name of a church.
I’ll accept that - Fred Phelps calls himself a Baptist, but I am sure the minister at the local First Baptist Church would want nothing to do with him. Then there’s Northern Baptists, Southern Baptists, Landmark Baptists (who we’re sort of talking about here), etc.
I have many Baptistic teachings in my heart. I have studied “Trail of Blood” on several occasions. This pamphlet represents a condensation of several lessons/sermons which were given by a Baptist Preacher named B.J.(?) Carroll, who died before the pamphlet was printed. Like any other man-made book, it is subject to error. Much of the information can be corroborated in other history books. The Cardinal Hosius discrepancy does not necessarily indicate intentional intellectual dishonesty, probably just failure to check all sources and addresses. Dan Rather had that problem. Dan is still a good man. There is some evidence that the reference to Hosius was at a different address. The reference to Hosius is not necessary to support the preponderence of evidence presented. This is not the only historical type document supporting some of the arguments. If the paradigm is the Catholic Encyclopedia, there will never be a preponderence. The court has been mostly kangaroos since before the Inquisitions. It matters not what the evidence might be.
I’ll also accept that the pamphlet suffers from sloppy scholarship, rather than intellectual dishonesty.
Apostolic succession? No. Whatever happened to Holy Spirit succession–from Pentecost to today? Yes, another Comforter, to lead in all Truth. “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age”. Jesus said that–to the First New Testament Church. He has kept His promise. We are still out here, “earnestly contending for the faith once, for all delivered unto the saints.” Now what?
And there is this passage: “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 (from the King James Version, used by most Baptists). If you don’t believe in apostolic succession, what do you believe, now, is Peter’s “Church”? At least the Landmark Baptists try to make a connection - you’ve got to give them an “A” for effort.

Otherwise, it’s, basically, just you, your Bible, and the Holy Spirit - a lot of people believe that, but, the problem with that is, first of all, if it were sound, you wouldn’t have the “seven Popes on every manure pile” problem, and, second, there’s that pesky “Church” it keeps talking about. Or is it the Pastor who receives special guidance from the Holy Spirit in his proclamation of the Word of God? If that’s it, why can Rev. Bob be guided by the Spirit in teaching matters of faith, but not the Pope?

So the choices I see are either: (a) a Church that can be connected to Peter and the apostles (the Catholic view); (b) there was a great apostacy (Mormon view - ignores the “gates of Hell” clause); or (c) individual guidance (ignores the mention of the Church).

Or, am I misunderstanding you?

What will be the criteria for making the determination? Who will decide? An Ecumenical council? Sounds like a tough jury selection. Could the answer be both are wrong?

Where will this be in 100 years?

You shall know the Truth–it shall make you free.

No parachutes in this plane–we are on a one-way trip to Glory.

There are still a lot of questions about this Trail of Blood.

Cardinal Hosius’ mysterious quote may have been found: The letters of Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius, Liber Epistolarum 150, titled “Alberto Bavariae Duci” circa 1563 A.D.

“Nam & alterius Principis edictum non ita pridem legi, qui vicem Anabaptistarum dolens, quos ante mille ducentos annes haeretisos, capitalique supplicio dignos essee projunciatos legimus, vult, ut audiantur omnino, nec indicta causa pro condemnatis habeantur.”

Translation: For not so long ago I read the edict of the other prince who lamented the fate of the Anabaptists who, so we read, were pronounced heretics twelve hundred years ago and deserving of capital punishment. He wanted them to be heard and not taken as condemned without a hearing.

The English translation was provided by the Head of the Latin Dept. at Oxford U.

1563-1200=363 A.D. Interesting. This is also 1200 years before Luther.

This may not vindicate J.M. Carroll. But it sure makes an interesting study.

Thanks for making this thread more interesting. I’m also praying that you come home to the Universal Church. About the quote that you mention and the actual writings of Cardinal Hosius, I found this other thread: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=194015&highlight=cardinal+hosius+quote

Have not met Fred. I contend for an unbroken trail of New Testament Style churches in every generation since the Church at Jerusalem–the one Jesus told: On This Rock I will build my Church…He also told the same group He would never leave them nor forsake them. That erases Joseph Smith etal.

I’ll also accept that the pamphlet suffers from sloppy scholarship, rather than intellectual dishonesty.

Agree.

Yep, this is the pivotal, foundational statement on which the apostolic see headed by Peter stands or falls. If this scripture makes Peter the Rock on which the Church is built, then all others are apostate, heretical usurpers. If Jesus is referring to the fact that He is that Rock, the chief cornerstone, the Rock of offense, disallowed by the builders, then there is an authority problem–a serious problem. There is something counterfeit here. Jesus was calling Peter a pebble–not terribly significant compared to Jesus, The Christ, The Son of the Living God ( the Solid Rock).

I believe in church–the assembly, local and visible only. I do not believe in a Mother Church with a Pontifex maximus…
Enlighten me about 7 popes in the … pile–is there penance to pursue this?.

So the choices I see are either: (a) a Church that can be connected to Peter and the apostles (the Catholic view); (b) there was a great apostasy (Mormon view - ignores the “gates of Hell” clause); or (c) individual guidance (ignores the mention of the Church).

Would Orthodox agree with (a)? Why? (b)already addressed, (c)not enough definition. I would offer a (d) The Church that Jesus is building with the Holy Spirit and His individual sheep. Yea, each one sovereign, independent, answering only to Jesus–no vicar nor hiearchy needed or necessary.

Or, am I misunderstanding you?
We are almost on the same sheet of music. It all stands or falls on Mt. 16:18 and Mt. 28:20.

Good points,

James Least

hang in there James, the rope is thin but who knows. humnnn…it all depends how much more you have to climb.

1. Please show me the verse in the Bible which gives the authority for any person to found his or her own church other than the ONE which Jesus Christ founded?
Can I, or anyone else simply hold up a Bible and declare, “This is my authority”?
If you believe this, then please show me the verse which sanctions it?

James:
Letter CL „Alberto Bavariae Duci“ (ibid.): in this letter we do have a reference to Anabaptists from 1,200 years earlier , („quos ante mille ducentos annes haeretisos“), however, this refers to sects such as the Donatists, who did not reject infant baptism or baptism by sprinkling, they merely insisted that apostates should be „re-baptized“, hence their status as „ana-baptists“.

I belong to the church Jesus is building. cf: John 3:16-21. I have started nothing myself and certainly do not need a dubbing from Rome, Wittenburg, Canterbury or Nauvoo.

Jesus is not building on a man. Man cannot handle it–being depraved by nature.
Jesus builds the church on Himself–the Chief Cornerstone. He needs no vicar nor co-redemptrix.

Hi James-
I’m glad you’re back. 🙂

Regarding man being depraved, what do you think about my post on Baptism?

Jesus built the Church on Himself yes, but from the OT through the NT, we see God always had an Authority on Earth (Moses, the prophets, the Apostles). Even the Early Church Fathers, those who were taught by the Apostles acknowledged an Authority on Earth.

St Ignatius of Antioch wrote the following about 90 AD. Legend has it he was the child Jesus took in his arms when he preached.
St. Ignatius:
Chapter 8. Let nothing be done without the bishop

See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid.
Chapter 9. Honour the bishop

Moreover, it is in accordance with reason that we should return to soberness [of conduct], and, while yet we have opportunity, exercise repentance towards God. It is well to reverence both God and the bishop. He who honours the bishop has been honoured by God; he who does anything without the knowledge of the bishop, does [in reality] serve the devil. Let all things, then, abound to you through grace, for you are worthy. You have refreshed me in all things, and Jesus Christ [shall refresh] you. You have loved me when absent as well as when present. May God recompense you, for whose sake, while you endure all things, you shall attain unto Him.

James,

Without the actual, visible Church, centered on the unity of the Eucharist, the real Body and Blood of Christ, then the mere mental concept of church is speculative, relative.

Jesus did not make any mistakes. He provided shepherds and a visible church for us. It took hundreds of years, where the first 300 were underground, where the Church could become a public, human institution.

It all gets down to trusting the Holy Spirit working through His apostles and successors. There is no perfection on this earth except in heaven. Our individual work is to discover the true faith and our path in it which is the Apostolic faith that comes from the Oral Tradition of Christ.

You have to look beyond your sources…to the apostles themselves and their associations. Surely they would not trust to mentor followers who would then in turn betray the mission and saving power of Christ.

Are you following me here?

Bibliographic reference please. This one may not go away–even with high-tech speculation.
The Orthodox immerse–they go way back too. They do not bow to the papacy either. Are they heretics?

It is very interesting why the Orthodox are not in union with the Latin Catholics. There is a thread…

Filoque…the Holy Spirit…Who it proceeded from Father or Son…I say the Holy Spirit is one with Father and Son, so preceeding or proceeding is irrelevant.

The other biggie is the concept of Original Sin expounded on by St. Thomas Aquinas…that Adam and Eve were our first parents and we all carry the defect of original sin from our parents. The Orthodox – correct me here – believe it is fallen humanity and that each one must be restored through Christ.
