I am curious if anyone knows the status of the Transalpine Redemptorists.

I know they are affiliated with the SSPX, being re-founded at the order of Msgr. Lefebvre, but I have also been told that they are recognized by Rome. The latter opinion would seem to agree with the recent decision by the Transalpine Redemptorists to use the revised Good Friday Prayer.

The fact that the TR accepted the revised Good Friday prayer gives them two thumbs up in my book- they put their money where their mouth is and really do accept the authority of the Pope.

However, the SSPX reccomends attending their Masses, and does not reccomend orders like the FSSP and ICK, so I don’t know what to say.

Considering a TR vocation, Caesar?

I am currently applying to the ICK, but I am keeping myself open to other possibilities. I would like to get some information from the Transalpine Redemptorists, but only if they are recognized by Rome.

It is true that they were refounded by priests from the SSPX under the direction of Msgr. Lefebvre, but I have heard differing opinions on their current status with Rome. That they openly accepted the revised Good Froday Prayer would seem to suggest that they are in good standing.

I harbor an interest in the ICK for myself somewhere down the road- could you PM me sometime?

First, I don’t know much about this group (I’ve read some saint bios on their website before, but that’s about it). It may be true, but this detail doesn’t really give credence for or against it. Because they profess a fidelity to Rome, the SSPX accept the 1983 Code of Canon law for example, except certain points they dislike–they also accept the 1962 Missal (which contributed to the breaking away of what would become the SSPV, who did not accept it).

So this group may be the same–they may have simply judged the revision to not be contrary to the faith, and therefore they accept it as within the authority of a reigning Pope–but their situation may be similar to the SSPX’s anyway. Their positive judgment of the Pope and his official acts would not determine their status, but rather the Pope’s judgment of them (which I do not know one way or the other).

I do realize this, but the fact remains that the Transalpine Redemptorists have jumped to accept Papal authority on this matter, something which cannot be said of the SSPX who only issued statements about their dissatisfaction with the revision (not to mention Bishop Williamson’s statement that Pope Benedict is anti-semitic) without any real directives to the Society in regards to the matter (which leads one to believe that it is being left to the judgement of individuals priests, most of whom will doubtless use of the older version of the Prayer for the Jews, some perhaps even using the pre-1962 version).

My curiosity about the status of the TR comes mostly from this issue. Why would a group so strongly linked to the SSPX quickly come out in complete support of Papal authority and accept the prayer if they are not recognized by Rome? Or perhaps they are trying to gain recognition?

Here is the statement from the Transalpine Redemptorists for referance:

The Solemn Prayers of Good Friday
Notice
In what concerns the Solemn Prayers of the Good Friday Liturgy, the Transalpine Redemptorists will obey with submission the newly promulgated Prayer for the Jews as ordered by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on February 4th 2008.
Fr. Michael Mary, C.SS.R.
Vicar General

As some have already pointed out, the fact of their accepting the prayer has nothing to do even with seeking reconciliation with Rome. Groups of the SSPX’s stripe are caught in a difficult position of claiming to recognize papal authority while ignoring that authority in matters upon which they disagree. The SSPX’s acceptance of the 1983 CIC, for instance, says absolutely zero about their desire to return to communion. I would say the Transalpine Redemptorists’ acceptance of the new prayer shows nothing beyond their feeling that they can accept this particular legislation in good conscience. They do, after all, divide history into the good old times and the era of the “New Church.”

There have been some rumors floating around the internet that the superior of the Transalpine Redemptorists has recently entered into negotiations with Rome for full recognization of the order. If this happens it will be a great success for the Holy Father, the Transalpine Redemptorists and traditionalists everywhere.

Refounded by SSPX priests?? Archbishop Lefebrve? Are you sure, I thought they approached Bishop Fellay. Where can I read about this… Thanks.

Here

“Within the month of having been advised by His Grace Arch-bishop Marcel Lefeb-vre to make a new Redemptorist founda-tion, using the original Rule, Father Michael Mary (by then 17 years a Redemptorist) and Father Anthony Mary (a Seminarian at that time), left Ecône on pilgrimage to Fatima to prayer-fully consider what the Archbishop saw as the Will of God for them. There at Fatima on the First Saturday of January 1987 they both consecrated themselves anew to the Immaculate Heart of Mary that they would be Her servants in undertaking the great work which lay before them. Upon their return to Ecône the Archbishop indicated their next move, through which they obtained their monastery on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, England. The Archbishop blessed the name that had been chosen for it: The Monastery of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was given this title because they desired that the monastery be an image of The Immaculate Heart of Mary; ie -“their Refuge and the way that will lead them to God.” (Our Lady at Fatima, 13 May 1917)”
