…is a new word for me, which I think means transferring one’s allegiance (for want of a better word) from one monastery to another. For the Benedictines, I believe it means transferring one’s stability. If one transfers from one institute to another, it’s a transfer.

In this day and age, unfortunately there appear to be a number of transfers, changes of stability, and transfiliations.

An unusual transfiliation occurred recently involving three enclosed monasteries of Dominican Nuns. Two from Corpus Christi in the Bronx, NY and one from Farmington Hills, MI have transfiliated to the Dominican Nuns in Elmira, NY, but are founding a branch monastery in Delaware! There are Dominican friars in DE, a very welcoming bishop who had an empty convent on one end of parish property. The new monastery is called Caterina Benincasa, in New Castle, DE. This all happened early this year.

The Elmira Dominicans appear to be a terrific bunch of nuns. They are totally orthodox, with great freedom of spirit, which they mentioned in a large guide to orders published in the 1970’s, which I read years ago. I have followed them ever since. They have a nice website,

…a newsletter in print and online, and a blog–!

Caterina Benincasa (St. C of S’s real name) has a one-page website here:
