American secular society has uncritically accepted a presupposition that the soul and the body are only incidentally related. This is incompatible with catholicism. Catholics understand that humans are a unity of body and soul. If someone’s body is clearly and unambiguously male, so is his soul. There is and cannot be a separation.
There ARE, however, cases where there are physical and biological ambiguities (such as the XXY condition) where it is not an easy thing to identify the sex of the person. In such cases, the usual catholic practice is say, “We’ll think about it ang get back to you in a few hundred years.” That may seem unhelpful, but it’s the best we can do. God doesn’t wait around in a magic 8 ball for questions to be asked! Some struggles, we’re expected to learn and grow through rather than being handed the answer. For those stuck in such a hard situation in the meantime, it is helpful to recognize ANOTHER foolish American absurdity: sexual activity is not next in line after food, water and shelter on the necessities list, contrary to populat belief.
