Last weekend, while making my second visit to the Vocationist Fathers (Society of Divine Vocations) in Florham Park, NJ, I had the honor to attend the ordination of Brother Rijo Johnson to the Transitional Diaconate. It – and the whole weekend – was really awesome.

I stayed out at their place in Florham Park, but the ordination took place at a parish they staff – St. Michael’s – in Newark. It’s about a 35 minute drive away. I caught a ride with Fr. Vernon and Fr. Ignatius. So, can you guess what we did to pass the time during the drive?

Can you?

If you guessed that we sang “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” you are a bit off.

The Vocationists have a very strong love for our Blessed Mother – in the person of Our Lady of Divine Vocations – so we prayed the Rosary, of course!

Anyhoo, it was really beautiful. The church was at least 3/4 full on a Saturday evening. The music was provided by the Sisters of the Society of Divine Vocations – in their habits, of course! Best of all, the ordination was presided over by auxilliary Bishop Edgar da Chunha of Newark – who is himself a Vocationist. (These guys have a total of nine priests in the U.S. at the moment and one of the nine is a bishop. Not bad, eh?)

My digital camera is really cheap, and I’m a lousy photographer, so most of my pictures didn’t come out. But I do have three to share. The first is of the choir loft at the church. The second is a picture of the ordination. If you look really, really close you can just make out Bishop Edgar and Brother Rijo. The third is a picture of Bishop Edgar’s portrait which hangs in the Vocationary in Florham Park.

Here are some more pics from my second visit to the Vocationists.

[1] Fr. Frank, (the bald one), teaching volunteer Jason how to make gravy. In addition to being vocation director, Fr. Frank is also in charge of retreats, including the catering.

[2] Alejandro, Fr. Frank’s right hand man, is from Honduras. He is a layman who lives and works at the Vocationary.

[3] Fr. Frank preparing to say Holy Mass for a high school Confirmation class.

[4] Fr. Ezio saying Holy Mass in Portugese for a retreat group.

Still more pics from my second visit to the Vocationists.

[1] Entering the Shrine to Our Lady of Divine Vocations.

[2] Statue of Our Lady.

[3] Entrance to the Rosary Garden.

[4] Inside the Rosary Garden.

Don’t worry, just four more pics!

[1] Entrance to the Stations of the Cross.

[2] Station Twelve.

[3] Meditation space in the Shrine Area.

[4] The Ten Commandments face the road outside the property.

The entire shrine – which is only partly pictured here – was built by Fr. Frank and Alejandro.

Here is a link to a whole bunch of pictures of the ordination. These are taken by a photographer, so they are clear. :o
