This topic recently crossed my mind since I like to travel quite often, so I thought I would pose a question to see what everyone’s thoughts are…

Suppose you are dating someone or engaged… how do you handle accommodations for traveling together? Separate rooms? Same room, separate beds? Or do you just not travel together? I’ve never actually traveled with a girlfriend, but I’ve traveled with a group of friends where the guys share one room and the girls have another.

I’m single now so this particular scenario doesn’t really apply to me just yet, but I could see myself facing this sort of situation at some point in the future since I take a number of trips per year and if I was in a long term relationship I would feel bad going away every so often without my girlfriend.

When my husband and I were dating, we took some day trips together but never spent the night away from home. This was mostly to prevent scandal–and believe me, people did ask us, “Are you staying there overnight?”

I don’t see anything wrong with with traveling with a significant other, but you may want to remember our call to being a Christian witness. People will definitely assume some rather unchristrian things about you if you go anywhere overnight with a member of the opposite sex.

I have some problems with that argument, because people assume unchristian things if you date for more than a month or so. My boyfriend got the safe sex talk from his mom after we’d been dating for 6mo. Then what to you do to keep people from assuming?

I don’t see any particular problem with traveling together as long as separate arrangements are made. It really isn’t that much different than when you are living and dating in the same town with different addresses. People do ASSume things but I think that is their problem not yours. If you have been dating for more than a month it is generally assumed that you are having sex, so I don’t think you are really required to go out of your way to stop people from talking.

Definately separate rooms would be in order. It is our duty as Christians to prevent scandal. I know people will talk but we must still set examples so at the very least, there should be separate rooms. Staying in the same room could cause quite the scandal.

You mentioned in your post traveling with a group where the girls stay together and the boys stay together. I think that’s the best possible solution (traveling with a group), but if you’re referring to traveling just the two of you, I think separate rooms are in order. I do believe that there are couples who could travel together and share a room and have separate beds and remain completely chaste, but I personally want to save all of that - even the intimacy of waking up in the same room as someone and seeing them first thing - for marriage. I’m sure others would disagree, but it’s just my two cents. 🙂

People will talk no matter what you do…

You could be like this: dating always in public, never holding hands, never touching, kissing, getting too close, hugging, long personal intimate talks, inviting bf/gf over for dinner, never doing anything to make anyone talk about you…Then what happens after 2 years of dating and you feel a kiss is in order, even if it’s on the hand? Everyone will eventually see you or hear about it and then all the rumors will start about where you were caught kissing her/him, or how or how long for etc…So it really doesn’t matter what you do eventually someone will talk…

The funny thing is that everyone says Catholics/Christians are supposed to be here for each other yet all we do is talk **** about others…lol 🤷 Well I guess that’s why we’re human!!!

I was never left alone ever about anything…Even if I was seen with a boy in public sitting together on a park bench eating pbj sandwhiches his mother or my mother would prepare for us…And we were kids…I was talked about since I could remember and I went to a Catholic school! LOL 🤷 I stopped worrying about what people think a long time ago…Except for my mother, I have always had the want to be accepted and felt loved by her, but that’s a different story! LOL

I think that in order to keep yourself pure and without you know falling into temptations, for your own sanity and soul, not for whatever people are going to say, stay in separate rooms…you know?! It’s better for you so that you don’t end up like me, hating myself because I made one stupid mistake and slept with my fiance and now out of wedlock will come our blessing! 😦 I love my fiance and this baby but man do I hate myself for being so irresponsible! I do feel ashamed…:o

So in order to have peace don’t let yourself get into situations you might regret the next day…For your own protection and peace!!! Believe me! Even though we are both extremely grateful we get this blessing, man do we both wished it was after marriage!

Again who cares about what people say but do it for your own relationship with GOD, you know live and lead by example! 😃

GOD BLESS!

Scandal is one thing, people talking is another. I can’t give you a precise answer because I believe it depends to a certain extent on the people where you go. If you share a room in the middle east and tell people you’ve got two separate beds, it obviously won’t work. If you go to Poland and you say the room is one but beds are two, people will believe you. If you go to a trendy place at the Mediterranean in the summer, no one will care. You can probably fathom such differences among particular regions in the States too. My preference would be two separate rooms, but I can’t say it should be obligatory for all people in all situations. The factors that Bella named are very important and so is occasion to sin.

The same way I would handle travel for business or pleasure with any person of the opposite sex, to whom I am not married–separate rooms, mutual agreement on sharing expenses and making decisions such as where to stay or eat, what to do and see. I will also add my personal opinion that there is no reason for married, or engaged, couples to share each and every travel experience, and it may be healthy for them to get away occasionally without each other, with siblings or friends for instance.

You should look at the area of Christopher West’s TOB lecture where he talks about the “Master of suspicion,” it’s true that no matter what, there is always someone making light of sin, when actually nothing had happened, but the “Master of suspicion” could actually be the individual that is fighting that sin themselves and accusing others in precarious situations.

What other people said about there will always be someone making snide comments or judging, or interrogating you or her whereabouts at all times is true.

Accountability: Your work, your parents, your kids, your church, your friends, your spouse, all keep dibs on you wherever you are at certain times… as a single person.

My tips: As someone already stated, only take a few getaways a year, not all, no need for that especially in dating. Use e-mail and phone to talk more. That is what is more important, knowing each other, glide into planning.

For getaways: Two rooms in different, but nearby hotels are best (this still will not matter to gossips, though). To ensure this or to stay at the same hotel(2 rooms of course)… bring a couple single friends and make them stay with you, or make her do that, or you both do that. It will be like college dorms again. I never lived in a college dorm, but one can only imagine the utter ignorance kids do and say. So does it matter, really? OR get married Right Away!! LOL jk…, however if you have it all figured out, why not?

Why bring friends? Witnesses, of course to your whereabouts, you might just be surprised at how amazed your own friends will be by your self-control, and they talk you up on it. Also, you do not know the self control of your counter part, most guys I know are very turned off if the significant other they are dating are coming on too strong, because it can “mean certain things,” or they haven’t grown up yet…, and so forth and so on. I mean make the perameters happen…, oddly enough, these are tactics used so many generations ago, Im amazed that we get to use them now, and that WE want to actually enforce them on ourselves.

OLHope, are you talking about avoiding rumours just to avoid them, or in terms of scandal? I don’t think avoiding scandal goes as far as having to stay in separate hotels. I think for that, one hotel but two rooms is already enough and taking friends along would be somewhat like caving in to gossipers… excessive, if you ask me.

You might have instigating friends.

Avoiding both, that is why it is frowned upon in family, in the church, cohabitation is wrong, but why, for what reason? I used to think this was a great idea because then you could know the other persons behaviors and bad habits in advance without having to marry them. My pastor states, that the other person will always have them, but that is the test and stress of a marriage, that you can endure it, after a while you have kids, that keeps you off track, and you get used to the silly habits.

I do not think that having two rooms(same hotel) will fix or help this either, just throwing out another scenario. It could be the same as having one room. If OP says to parents that he is going on a weekend trip to Vermont, and his gf is going with him. If his parents are strict or disapproving, they will not simply allow or condone it. So he says, ok well, it will be alright because we got seperate rooms!!! Oh well then, the parents will think, oh ok, nothing wrong with that, that proves they were separated… Uhhhh , nah uh! My situation is not any better if he actually parks the car to see her up at the other hotel. Either situation can be touted in scandal/hearsay as one maybe staying over by the other ALONE to themselves, very interested in each other and NOT married…, and that is how dirt starts…, however many people especially teens are of the mindset that they can do sa-hoo many things that are not sex(making out/other disgusting deviances not worth mentioning).

Having the friends there (hopefully just as religious), would help because then they were all together when doing things. So they go to Vermont, all four of them get ready at the same time, him in his room, her and her friends in her room, they go out to walk on the street windowshopping all at the same time, they all eat together at the same time… initially you spend all your time together and poop out to sleep at your rooms together with no alone time…, this is hiring yourselves a babysitter, this is archaic, whatever…, it works (if you have the right set of friends). Now this is something my family did in generations past. Except the friends had to be brothers and sisters and/or cousins (they were sure to tell on you).

All of this stems from so many generations of skepticism and false persecution based solely on suspicion and lack of trust(not that all of it was not properly understood, we all know many people in these circumstance deviant, in fact most do, we just come to accept it in society). Taking you back since the times of Verona. Most homes with daughters usually have balconies to meet a courting gentleman. YEP, lock up your daughters gentlemen, TRUST in no one. And that was the way it was. Architecture made it difficult to scale your way to a window, and most balconies were above a busy room downstairs, like the kitchen, WHERE btw, all of your family heard any conversation.

Now today, there is still this 95-98% skepticism in any person who cares about this still. The church does, why do you think they ask you outright about your living arrangements when you marry. Roughly 50-60% of pre cana couples are cohabitating, and it is their job to stop it. Vehemently, but what can the church do if they do not listen to them? Turn away more Catholics at a tender time in our history? Many disapproving parents say YES, many have shook down a priest and disgraced him for going on with it.

Like someone else stated, just do the day trips, there’s tons of stuff to do when you do the research. Spend time with the friends in the group, or ask a friend in town if you or her could bunk with them…, there are so many ways. Not all of them will ease some people, but what can you do.

Lastly, telling most people that you went with her alone on a weekend or week vacation is still frowned upon, then if conversation even gets to the arrangements, well you are screwed, I mean let’s say jay is 27 like his name might suggest (Im the master of suspicion, hahhaha), and his future gf is also 27, when their parents ask them where they went and an “Ohhhh…, but dont worry we didnt do anything” slips or anything to that effect…, no matter what, the reception to that is always a furoughed brow…,chances are good that they will have to resort to arguments that teens engage in. Two 27-year olds are old enough to understand why it is not right. I think it is what it really boils down to. We all have free will. When the OP does finally date, he should consult his pastor about it, or figure out how they make arrangements for that kind of stuff for say…, an engagement encounters weekend (like pre cana, more intensive).

To be honest, throughout half of the post I was wondering what you were on about. Clearly, cohabitation is a separate subject from a situation in which two people stay in the same hotel but in a different room. The latter corresponds with two unmarried people living in two different flats in the same block. 😛

Pardon my French, but going to the same college could be seen the very same way, as, after all, there’s plenty of room there and everyone knows about college life. By the same token, as a teacher, I should never be left alone with a female and as a lawyer, I should always have someone around when talking to a female client… Not gonna happen. Giving people reasons for a legitimate suspicion is one thing. Catering to people’s paranoia is another. As a man, sometimes you need to do that in order to preserve a woman’s reputation (for some reason, often yours wouldn’t be harmed ), but at some point one has to draw the line and tagging 30 other people along when going on a trip with a girlfriend is well beyond that point. People need time alone. Some can’t use it responsibly, but many can.

This is more me “relating” than giving advice.

“No scandal” was actually a huge source of frustration for me and my husband while we were dating. The both of us saw absolutely no point in having sex before marriage. None. It wasn’t just because we wanted to avoid sin. Having sex is a big responsibility. No fear of STDs being virgins and all…but there’s pregnancy and regular gyno visits for good health (after I got married I found out I’m prone to UTIs so that meant even MORE doctor visits).

All while lying to our parents of course. Such a high maintenance lie seemed like a total chore and just not worth it.

To be fair both DH and I have asexual tendencies so that gives us an advantage in the chastity department. Though we do enjoy the marital embrace it’s a bit of a non-issue if we don’t embrace for a while. We not super humans with will power of steel. We’re just wired differently. :o

apologies but here on it gets a liiiiittle ranty

So since we were so inclined to not have sex, our real difficulty was not being able to travel together. We’re geeks that like to go to cons…and we were not too happy that our con schedule was completely dependent on whether his family was going to a con that summer (my family wouldn’t be caught dead at one). We get that we don’t want people to talk but people assume anything just by saying you’re dating someone. Those who don’t know us very well are shocked to hear that we never had sex and weren’t living together (simply because that’s supposedly what serious dating couples do these days). Those who do know us would be surprised if we *were *having sex.

At first, he could only come to my family’s house and I could not visit his dorm (this was really to prevent the neighbors from talking as my parents knew us better than that). But gradually we got out more…alone even. People actually weren’t talking. Our already established reputation was so strong (we were best friends for years beforehand) no one really assumed anything. Anyone who did ask, believed our “no”. We also tended to behave more like best friends in public than a dating couple right up to the end. Our wedding kiss was our first public kiss.

I won’t lie…the whole thing did seem very unfair to us at the time. I understand why…but it doesn’t change the fact that there was no way we were going to give in to that temptation even if we shared a bed (yeah I can say it that confidently). We were very blessed not to have that particular cross. But it made the one we *did *have a little heavier. We didn’t like that fact that we were doing all of this for appearances, which drove us more insane than sharing a room ever would have.

We didn’t travel alone but eventually we did travel without parental supervision and never longer than a weekend (plus a Friday maybe). Once we were engaged, we finally went to an out of state weekend con on our own with some friends. But since the girls outweighed the boys 4-1…same room separate bed. He found it ridiculous to pay for a second room just to keep up appearances. Especially since we weren’t traveling alone. If it were just us, we wouldn’t be going (honoring my parents wishes).

It’s really not an exaggeration to say that “not causing scandal” anymore was a bigger motivator for us to get married than sex…which is very nice too don’t get me wrong. But while we were dating it was very common for us to say we can’t wait to sleep with each other…literally. 😉

It kinda goes without saying that in our first year of marriage, we traveled a LOT. 👍

Chev, I was only giving my opinion, I did go off subject a bit, because well one thing leads to another, and yes cohabbing and traveling are different, but one in the same as going off alone together suggests. Don’t you think you find out more intimate details and behaviors sleeping over anywhere alone together? Should it stop there? Ok do day trips alone together, does that mean there should not be suspicion? I was taught back in history that a great many things happened with the invention of the Ford model T. My only point was he has free will, anyone can point fingers with any set up, so like someone else stated, if you have judgmental/accusing friends and family, well don’t tell them anything of it.

I’m sorry if I offended you. Something was telling me it wasn’t a good moment for a posting and I should’ve spent more time thinking before talking. I apologise if what I said hurt or offended you.

I believe that friends have the right to be alone, including friends of the opposite sex. People who are attached to each other in a more special way, also have some details they don’t need to share with witnesses and they are entitled to their privacy. This is the same reason why correspondence is private.

My point is that, as someone said before, there are people who will always look for sin everywhere and you would have to make enormous efforts to avoid them thinking you’re sinning. Even if you told them someone were a handsome man/pretty woman, they’d think you were sinning in your throughts and they would lecture you about that or just grow their suspicions in silence. That’s what I called “paranoid”. “Paranoid” in the sense of seeing danger or enemies everywhere. It didn’t apply to you or anyone posting here, it applied to people who behaved the way I described, i.e. who would always see sin in it just because two people were attracted to each other and there was a minute or two when they weren’t supervised.

As for your Ford T example, yes, that’s true, and if someone would be tempted too strongly by even being in the same car with an attractive (and mutually attracted) person, then yes, the couple should not travel together. If most such situations end in sexual intercourse in a given community, then yes, there might be good reasons to avoid such trips. However, legitimate fears are one thing and people being overly suspicious is another. Making friendship or love a shameful secret, or on the other hand, showing every detail of it at all times to witnesses in order to avoid suspicion, would be a sad thing and I believe our avoidance of scandal does not need to stretch that far. If we allow excessive suspicions to take control of our lives, it will take away our freedom but it won’t satisfy the suspicious people because there will always be demand for more and more account from us. Imagine the law without presumption of innocence. This is the same thing.

Is this more acceptable in this form? I would ask for the same courtesy.

My boyfriend and I have tenative plans to visit his family in Arkansas (he is in the USAF and is stationed in Washington State)… his family wants to meet their “future daughter-in-law” so when he gets time off approved, we will fly down there. We don’t have sleeping arrrangements planned or thought out yet… your post made me think about it though!

We will probably see if we can stay with his parents (and five siblings lol), for monetary reasons, and so that we will behave ourselves =P
