We’re often told that when we endure suffering for the sake of our faith, we are “laying up treasure” in heaven. Obviously this is not treasure in the sense of some kind of natural good. What would be precious, rare, or strictly “mine” in the afterlife? While this may be unknowable, I ask for your speculation.

"Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” -John 11:25

Our faith is the pearl of great price that will lead us to eternal life with our Father in Heaven.

The treasure in heaven is none other than Heaven itself. I suggest you read yday´s readings. Id recommend you meditate the Gospel (Matt 13: 44-52) that reading ought give a more accurate answer to your question. I highly doubt we shall have any earthly (or even heavenly) possessions in Heaven. Except for God´s love and Glory tis very unlikely you could claim anything as strictly “yours”.

God bless u

These responses are consistent, and I see no reason to disagree. However, doesn’t that make this language of treasure… misleading at best? I mean, my understanding is that there is grace to be found in suffering, but wouldn’t that strictly be an earthly treasure?

Nobody has touched on the theological concept of the treasury of merit, a reference to which I have often understood the OP’s quoted expression to be.

Thanks for mentioning this. I read about it and I think my question is answered now.

Perhaps the suffering causes an inward transformation in ourselves giving us understanding, strength and a heightened sense of what is right. Perhaps it is this inner transformation that brings us closer to God which is supposed to be what Heaven is about. Just speculation. 😃

You are dead right! Suffering increases our capacity for compassion - which is linked to love. We share in the suffering of Jesus and see everything in its true perspective. In the end nothing matters but the extent to which we love others because through loving others we love God and ourselves… 🙂

hope this makes sense, bit of a lot of verses, anyway…

Christ is treasure
2 Corinthians 4:6-7
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness,
hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge
of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ. And we have this treasure in earthen vessels,

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known
what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles;
which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

suffering to the loss of me (dead in Christ),
laying down our lives in many different ways for others
Matthew 16:24 "…If any man will come after me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father,
and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters,
yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Philippians 3:8 "…I have **suffered the loss **of all things,
and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ

Matthew 10:39 “…he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ

die and gain Christ and his eternal life…treasure
Colossians 3:4 "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear,
then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
