Treasure in heaven?

We’re often told that when we endure suffering for the sake of our faith, we are “laying up treasure” in heaven. Obviously this is not treasure in the sense of some kind of natural good. What would be precious, rare, or strictly “mine” in the afterlife? While this may be unknowable, I ask for your speculation.

The treasure in heaven is none other than Heaven itself. I suggest you read yday´s readings. Id recommend you meditate the Gospel (Matt 13: 44-52) that reading ought give a more accurate answer to your question. I highly doubt we shall have any earthly (or even heavenly) possessions in Heaven. Except for God´s love and Glory tis very unlikely you could claim anything as strictly “yours”.

These responses are consistent, and I see no reason to disagree. However, doesn’t that make this language of treasure… misleading at best? I mean, my understanding is that there is grace to be found in suffering, but wouldn’t that strictly be an earthly treasure?

Perhaps the suffering causes an inward transformation in ourselves giving us understanding, strength and a heightened sense of what is right. Perhaps it is this inner transformation that brings us closer to God which is supposed to be what Heaven is about. Just speculation.

You are dead right! Suffering increases our capacity for compassion - which is linked to love. We share in the suffering of Jesus and see everything in its true perspective. In the end nothing matters but the extent to which we love others because through loving others we love God and ourselves…
