Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?"
18 Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? 19 12 Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. 20 He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” 21 They replied, “Caesar’s.” 13 At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

I want to know if many Catholics know the true meaning of this verse. Anyone??

No taxation without representation, you scoundrel!

(what the heck is the purpose of this thread, anyway?)
What do you mean?
Wasn’t the 1st post clear enough. Give a shot at what you think the verse means…comprende?

My understanding was that Jesus was protesting the capital gains tax. 😛

While the commentary is funny, please stay on topic. Further off topic posts will be deleted and the thread may be closed.

I think one thing it means is that to God, the bits of metal and pieces of paper that governments put out as money, don’t really count as “tribute”. God wants our hearts and souls, not our pocketbooks. (although the way we use our pocketbooks does reflect where our hearts and souls are)

Another thing that this verse means is that, as Christians in this world, we have a responsibility to the governments and rulers over us. Although we should never accept injustice, we have a duty to be obedient to the laws that are not unjust. On the other hand, this verse also affirms that the things that are due to God should not be given to the state.

We are created in the likeness of God, we bear his image, So we give Cesar the coin which bears Cesars image, and we give God ourselves which bears his image.

In a way, the other response can be acceptable as such, but I think the true meaning of the verse is something like:
We are created in the likeness of God, we bear his image, So we give Cesar the coin which bears Cesars image, and we give God ourselves which bears his image.
So we are to give all of ourselves to God because we bear his image. Caesar only gets his coins. See how God crushes Caesar!
