Tridentine Ash Wednesday Mass

I’ve searched the internet and these forums, and i can’t seem to find what I’m looking for, so hopefully someone here can help me out.

I’m thinking about attending a Tridentine Mass for Ash Wednesday; is it set up very differently from other masses as it is in the Novus Ordo? Is it just the short services distributing the ashes like in the NO or is it a full mass?

I’ve always attended a full Mass on Ash Wednesday (Novus Ordo). I know that some parishes offer distribution of ashes only services, but hey, any excuse to go to Mass . . .

Huh, really? When do they distribute the Ashes? I’ve always just been to the short service for the distribution of ashes. I guess thats the only thing they had early enough for us kids to still make it to school. So i never even realized there was another way. Wow i feel uneducated now. But thats what college life is all about, i guess:shrug:

The distribution of ashes takes place after a short homily or in place of one. The Masses I’ve attended usually take place in the evening (which, I will admit does kind of defeat the purpose of walking around with a mark of our faith on our head).

In the TLM Ash Wednesday is a much bigger deal than in the Novus Ordo.

Before Mass begins there is ceremony, singing and blessing of ashes with holy water and incense. It is very much involved with deacon and sub deacon and even without them the ceremony before Mass is still allowed to be with the same solemnity according to the Memoraiale Rituum.

Ashes are placed on the forehead of those attending Mass BEFORE MASS BEGINS by the priest only. Directives state that men are to be kneeling seperate from women (women on left side and men on right side.)

There is no “homily” in the TLM…There may be a sermon but it is not necessary and is not part of the Mass.

Secondly, Ashes in the TLM are NOT distributed during the time designated for a sermon, they are distributed before Mass begins with the preist dressed in cope, not the Mass vestments.

I think he was describing it in his NO mass.

But thanks to everyone for the description. That sounds so amazing, i think i really have to go now. I might go to one of the short ashes-only NO services in the morning, so that i h ave the ashes all day, and theyll probably be worn off by the TLM at night. This is permissable, right?

Gee…I thought this was the “Traditional Catholicism Forum” and that the “Liturgy and Sacraments” forum is where the Novus Ordo [Ordinary Form] is discussed.

I was making a contrast. I know you were discussing the Novus Ordo.

wow thanks! thats actually really helpful, because it saves me from having to scour all over the internet to find the propers and try to make sure they were correct, etc etc. Thanks for the help.

Wow, you don’t have to be wise guy in your replies.
The OP’s question implied that the Novus Ordo only had a distribution of ashes-only liturgy, I was pointing out that this is not true, it also provides for the distribution of ashes within the context of the Mass (which is the preferred method).

Just FYI , ashes worn all day without wiping them off is a devotional practice, but by no means required. They can be removed after the service ends if it is more appropriate for your environment or line of work. That said, keeping them on is a pious practice and could bring up fruitful discussion of the faith with Christians and non-Christians alike.
