I know that non-Catholics are not supposed to receive Communion at Catholic churches, but they can head up receive blessing from the priest in the Novus Ordo. Is it possible, and if so how, to receive blessing or whatever at the Tridentine Mass when it is time for Communion?

Welcom, tom.

Check out this sticky: Receiving “blessing” instead of communion…

To my knowledge, it is not possible for a non-Catholic to receive a particular blessing at the EF Mass (especially at the reception of the Eucharist), but there is a blessing of all the people at the end that is given to all of the congregants equally.

since it is not part of the rites of Mass, nobody should approach for a blessing at communion time unless invited specifically by that priest at that time, as it is not the norm, merely a practice that has sprung up in some places, and is not part of the OF of Mass. It follow that neither was it ever part of the EF or Tridentine Mass so no one should presume to ask for a blessing at that time but be content with the general blessing given to all present at the end of Mass.

I’ve seen our EF priests bless small children whose parents bring them to the communion rail (infants and toddlers who cannot sit alone as the parents go up to receive). However, I’ve never seen our EF priests bless an adult, or seen children approach the communion rail without their parents specifically to get a blessing.

Even as a catechumen in an OF parish, I never felt comfortable asking for a crossed-arm blessing during the reception of communion. However, I did pray the prayer of Spiritual Communion and meditated on the Real Presence in the body and blood. I also spent a lot of time after mass (and away from mass time) in eucharistic adoration in front of the tabernacle. I believe that this practice brings much happiness to Christ.
My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

Hello Tom,

I have been a Tridentine RC since 1994; it would be inappropriate to go up to the Communion Rail for a general blessing during the Eucharistic Sacrament, (unless this was cleared by the priest beforehand). As already mentioned; there is a general blessing for the entire congregation towards the end of the Mass, (after Communion and just before the reading of the Last Gospel).

Like Stavros; I would also recommend “receiving” a Spiritual Communion while kneeling in the pew. I hope this helps; if you need to know anything else about the Tridentine Church; please feel free to PM me. 🙂

**Please recite the Rosary daily. Each bead; devoutly said; is an eternal rose presented to Jesus and Our Blessed Mother.

Be sure to read The Secret of the Rosary by Saint Louis de Montfort. It will change your life.

When you are in a tight spot; pray to St. Jude and have faith. **

I agree with what everyone has said. Please do not go up for a blessing.

Priests at EF, yes I’ve seen them bless children who are too young to receive and too young to be left alone in the pews while parents and older siblings receive. But I have never noticed anyone old enough to receive getting blessings. OF Masses, I’ve noticed it, but you have to make sure you are in a line where a priest gives Communion.
