Explain to me then what the difference between High and Solemn High is.

The way i’ve been taught, there are three types of Mass: (1) Missa Lecta (2) Missa Cantata, and (3) Missa Solemnis.

Low Mass / “Missa Cantata” / and Solemn High Mass.

This a good idea 😊 to sit at the back.

For taking communion, it’s kneeling and on the tongue. I guess I will just follow everyone when it’s my turn.

That is why at the beginning I suggest that you sit in the back. You get a chance to see what everybody else does so that you can follow their lead. Later on you should sit near the front so that you can see better.

Low Mass - Priest does not chant or sing the mass
High Mass - Priest chants / sings the mass - no deacons and sub-deacons
Solemn High Mass - has deacon and sub-deacon

A “Missa Cantata” just means “sung mass”

Historically (and using Latin) that would have meant just the priest - so it would have been the High Mass

But in today’s English slang, Missa Cantata just means Mass with song.

I have been to Low Mass with Hymns, where the priest is saying a Low Mass, but there is a choir singing a few minor parts.

So while “Missa Cantata” is historically what we call High Mass without Deacon & Subdeacon, it’s gets complicated sometimes - at least in some parts of the USA.

I hope this makes sense.

Make sure you sit with a healthy number of people in front of you, so you can copy their actions, and practice saying, “Et cum spiritu tuo.” 🙂 Everything else will take care of itself! Congrats! 💙

I had a priest who suggested scraping your tongue with your teeth before receiving.

Or were you wanting to know about going up to the altar rail?

Or were you wanting something else?

I receive on the tongue in novus ordo standing, but from what I remember in grade 4 at the latin mass, there are kneelers at the front. So we kneel and receive on the tongue to show reverence right?

Yes, going up to the altar rail. I’m actually planning to go to the Low Mass in 3 hours tonight.

They have it 😊
