In July 2007, Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio Summorum Pontificum designated the form that the Tridentine Mass was given in 1962 as “an extraordinary form” of the Roman Rite, the “ordinary form” being the form introduced in 1969-1970 also known as the Roman Missal format as used at the present time. The question arises as to why Pope Benedict XVI was intent on promulgating the Tridentine mass format at the present time, maybe because celebrants were instituting their own format of the mass and thus deviating from the Roman missal format, certainly it was not the Latin aspect that was the issue.

Maybe because of the politicking done for many years and the complaints that the Indult JPII provided us was not ‘expansive’ enough as well???

The Tridentine had never gone away, all Benedict XVI did was allow it to be more widely celebrated without having to get all kinds of permissions to do so. For the average parishioner like me it will change absolutely nothing. There are only about 5 people in our parish who might request the EF and our priest has absolutely no intention of celebrating it.

Pope Benedict XVI knows the importance of the Liturgy in the life of the Church. Read his book The Spirit of the Liturgy and a collection of his liturgical essays in Feast of Faith. He understands the value of a liturgical Rite which nourished countless Saints and inumerable laymen, which goes back to the reign of St. Gregory the Great and parts of which can be traced back to the Early Church. He understands the importance of reverance, solemnity, symbolism and ceremony. He understands that if you change the liturgy you change the world.

  1. Many of the Bishops have been refusing to grant permission under the previous Ecclesia Dei Indult, in direct violation of it.
  2. The papal bull “Quo Primum Tempore” from Pope Pius V, Council of Trent already grants the right of every priest in the Roman Rite to say or sing the Tridentine Rite of Mass. Meaning that the TLM can NEVER ever be suppressed or outlawed. After 1969 those who were in authority attempted to suppress and outlaw the useage of the Tridentine Rite. Summorum Pontificum rights this wrong done in the past.
