Tridentine Mass in Hagerstown, MD

I live in Gaithersburg, MD, I go at St. John Neumann. I think the closest one to you would be either Baltimore, or Charles Town WV, I’m not sure, here is a website with a list of TLM’s around the nation, good luck! the-latinmass.com/id187.html

I grew up 40 minutes from Hagerstown and went to school 20 minutes from there…cool! Good to see Hagerstown in the news for something worthwhile for a change. 🙂 (Last time I saw them in the news was when they got labeled the second ugliest city in the United States).

I was going off of that website to find TLM’s in my area, is there a better one? If there are more TLM’s in my area I would definitely like to know about them.

Hey everybody!

Well, the time has been changed as of last week from 2 PM to 12:50 PM. That’s 12:50 PM at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Hagerstown, MD. We have plenty of room! We only had 23 make it this week, 32 last week. Prior to the time change, we’ve been having somewhere in the 30s to 60s show up each week. Here’s a little notice about the time change: Extraordinary Form Mass Time Change.

Here’s a news story about it from last year: Tridentine Mass in Hagerstown speaks to ‘majesty of the church’. Father Marc, in the picture for this news story, was there today. The other priests who come for this Mass are Monsignor Bastress from St. Alphonsus, and Father Larry Adamczyk.

Hi Pete,

Is this a low form, missa solemnis or missa cantata? Or will they change it up? I’m just starting to appreciate the difference between the forms. I went to a latin mass today expecting a solemn high but there was only the priest and 2 altar boys. I’m still learning but when I checked the website, today was not a high mass as I expected. It was still nice, but just not what I was expecting. I’ll try again in October for a missa solemnis.

I’m sorry, I don’t really know the differences between Missa Solemnis and Missa Cantata. It is usually a Low Mass. They had chanting most recently on August 26th, but no incense. There are altar servers in training so that they’ll be able to use incense in the future. They were able to do this last year and earlier in the year this year, but I guess they lost one of the servers and couldn’t really do it anymore.

Thanks for the clarification that it is a low mass. I’m sure someone can correct me but I believe the missa solemnis is a solemn high mass and the missa cantata is sung (but I believe there can be chanting at both).

I am a very musical person and I really enjoy singing hymns as well as listening to chanting. I will likely continue to go to the NO at my home parish and do one or two solemn high masses or missa cantatas a month. TBH, keeping up with the EF is a bit of a mental workout! However, something is pushing me onward. . .I do like NO, though, especially when it includes latin chant (ie Missa VIII).

I just wanted to reply to you (not able to PM you)…

If you’ve heard “Your Grace Is Enough,” then you’ve heard Matt Maher. 🙂 I heard this song in a Protestant setting before I came back to the church, and I was immediately drawn to it. I was pretty moved when I discovered some time later that it was written by a Catholic!

He’s got other great songs like “The End and the Beginning” (where else will you hear “transubstantiation” mentioned in a contemporary song? Ha!), and many others. “All Glory to God” is a favorite of mine. “Empty and Beautiful” for a slower song.

If you were ever to buy only one album, I’d go for Empty and Beautiful or maybe Overflow. Enjoy!

Kari Jobe. I heard her “Steady My Heart” song on the radio last week and thought it was the singer from Six Pence.

I’m a revert by the grace of God, largely through the writings of Augustine. I came to faith in Christ as an adult through a Reformed Baptist tradition, and this led me to writings of John Calvin, and from him to Augustine, and then home to Christ’s Church. That’s the short story of God’s grace in my life.

The Canons Regular of the New Jerusalem will be celebrating the Tridentine Mass at Saint Mary Catholic Church this coming Monday. They’re a group of Augustinian monks. Here’s the announcement in our bulletin:

At 7 pm on Monday, April 8, there will be a Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form (Latin Mass). The Mass will be celebrated by the Canons regular of New Jerusalem and will have full solemnity, including incense, candles, a special choir performing a full polyphonic Mass setting, and a priest, deacon and sub-deacon.
