A few questions…What’s the Tridentine Mass and the Novus Mass?

i’m a new convert so just curious

Correction on my post, I meant the director of religious education.

The Tridentine Mass is the pre vatican II mass. The Novus Ordo Mass is the mass developed as a result of vatican II. There are some differences among them. One is the priests faces the tabernacle in the Tridentine and in the N.O. the priest faces the people. There are several other differences, but the sacrifice of the mass is celebrated in both.

The picture is of people holding urns of incense around the altar during consecration.

For everyone who has checked out my previous post about the Tridentine Mass, I have a new question. For those who prefer the Tridentine Mass, do you believe that it is the only valid mass? Would you attend a Novus Ordo mass if you could not attend a Tridentine Mass. I apologize if this topic has already been over discussed, but I would like to get some idea about this topic. Thanks.

hi matt

i attend the tridentine mass. do i believe that the novus ordo is valid? yes. if i absolutely had to go i very begrudgingly would go. i find the novus ordo so offensive. most of the people look like they rolled out of bed and their attitude is well at least i go. in my opinion it is the very least a catholic should do. they slouch, they dress terrible, parents hiding out in the cry room talking about anything but Christ, the tabernacle is off to the side somewhere, most of the church has a resurrected Jesus instead of a crucifix. which by the way are both against the teachings in a basic catechism. the priests or bishops will not say anything about dress, birth control, saying the rosary, etc… for fear it will offend someone. they talk about a loving Jesus only. they do not talk about the other side of Christ. the judicial side of him. this is a huge disservice to the people.

at the tridentine mass, these problems are almost non existing. you have a few people that straggle in inappropriately dressed but it is rare. and usually these are the people who are new to the tridentine mass. eventually they see that we do things differently and the next thing you know they are even wearing a mantilla or a tie.

Yes, I believe the Novus Ordo mass to be valid, but I find a more special connection with the TLM. Luckily for me we have a parish ran by the FSSP with three priest who serve the community. If I had to go to the NO mass though I would, but since I have a choice I attend the TLM weekly.

I love both the TLM and the Ordinary Rite (I really don’t want to say call it Novus Ordo). I feel I must have both. I feel spiritually connected with both forms.

I feel I must have both rites and that I must adore God with both rites. Both Masses offer me spiritual solace.

If the priest celebrating the Novus Ordo Mass does not believe in what the Mass is- IT IS INDEED INVALID. He MUST intend on offering Jesus Christ, under what appears to be bread and wine which are no longer bread and wine to the Triune God for the sins of the living and dead.

Now with the removal of the offertory, and Eucharistic prayer #2, which is basically identical to what is said in non-Catholic “churches”- you can never really know now can you. Especially a priest who breaks the Host before the consecration… you just never know.

In the TLM there is no mistake possible. The priest prays the words. The words of the offertory along with the words of the Roman Canon make no mistake of what is being done.

I do attend the Novus Ordo out of necessity only when I must, but I travel to my hometown parish when I do- at least I know the priest there intends on doing what the Church does.

I BELIEVE THAT THE TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS IS MORE VALID THAN THE NOVUS ORDO MISSAE BECAUSE IT IS ANCIENT OR BEEN IN HISTORY LONGER THAN THE NEW ONE. IN ADDITION, MANY SAINTS AND MARTYRS WE RECOGNIZED TODAY PRAYED AND DEFENDED THAT PARTICULAR MASS THAT THE MODERN PEOPLE COMPLETELY DENIES ITS TRUTHS. I DON’T SEE ANYMORE REASONS WHY TO COMPARE THIS VENERABLE RITE TO THE MODERN MASS WHICH IN FACT CHANGED THE WHOLE ATTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE TOWARDS THE AUTHENTIC PRE-VATICAN TRADITIONS OF THE CHURCH. I WAS BORN AND RAISED UNDER THE NEW CHURCH, BUT WHEN I FOUND OUT THE TRUTH I EMBRACED THE TRADITONAL LATIN MASS AND THE TRADITIONAL TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. I AM NOT HERE TO DOWNGRADE OTHER PEOPLE’S OPINIONS, I’M JUST BEING TRUTHFUL ABOUT IT.

Yes, I certainly believe that the NO is a valid Mass and have no hangups assisting at it. That said, when I’m around a church that offers the TLM you won’t find me at the NO Mass unless I got up too late (mea culpa) or I have to be there for some reason. If I have the option of an Eastern Rite DL but not a TLM, then I will go to the DL. If these two options are not available, I will pick the most trad NO I can find. If all I have is an “average” NO, I’ll go without a complaint but if all that is available is a below average NO-I’ll offer it up and pray for the day when people won’t be subjected to ideologically impoverished liturgy.

While I have no hangups assisting at the NO, I also make no bones about prefering the TLM. When I assist at the TLM, I can trust that I will not be subjected to syrupy homilies and/or questionable theology preached from the pulpit, poor vestments/sacred vessels/architecture beyond what cannot be helped, and an inherent reverence that cannot be matched by any NO-even ones that make use of all the traditional options still available.
