So, I’m going to finally start making the drive to go to the Tridentine Mass I think. I don’t think I’ll have a problem figuring out what to do. I’ve read a lot about that in other spots. My question is: My wife and I have our 2 year old son. Is it appropriate to bring children to a Tridentine Mass as it is for the Novus Ordo mass? He’s not going to be running around or playing with stuff and if he does I’ll take him out right away. Just wondering if this is a normal thing. I gotta think that people brought there little kids to mass back in the day and they must have acted up from time to time.

Yes there are actually many really big families at the Church I attend sometimes the kids that will start crying or running around. Parents just take them outside and calm them down a little. At the Church I go to there is actually a crying room which some people use too. So dont worry no one is going to kick you out orr something if your children act up, just take them outside if it gets really bad.

You’ll most likely find that there are more children at the Tridentine Mass than the Novus Ordo (English speaking) Mass. At my parish, which offers both forms of the Mass, the Tridentine families have many more children than those who attend the Novus Ordo Mass. It’s easily the fastest growing population at our parish, with Tridentine infant Baptisms occurring about 10 to 1 over the Novus Ordo baptisms.

YES!

There may be some evil, stupid trads who think babies should be kept away in a closet until they are older, but honestly, IGNORE THEM. They are idiots, and too worried about themselves than the Church and Her Faithful.

So, by ALL MEANS take your son!

As the others have said, you’ll likely end up seeing larger, smaller families there than at an NO.

Eastern Catholics bring baptized infants to Communion.

So I don’t think you’ll have a problem bringing your little one to the EF.

2-year-olds are not very good at this on their first time, but they’ll get the hang of it. The TLM is MUCH MUCH MUCH less distracting to them, so they’ll actually sense the quietness and peacefulness of the Mass-- they’ll fit in smoothly after a handful of times (and as they get closer to 3! 😃 )

It is my experience that parents with young children sit in the back few rows so that they can excuse themselves quickly. And parents with kids who are not young sit in the first few pews so that the kids can see the action on the altar and focus in on that. 2 is still probably in the back-row stage! I bet you’ll see many parents who can commiserate with you.

Kids aren’t born knowing how to handle themselves at Mass-- it takes a little practice. Don’t be surprised to see other parents whose children seem to have halos floating over them in church. Their kids are unholy terrors, just like any 2-year-old can be. But they’ve also got a little experience at a TLM already. You’ll get there. I think that when children get a little older and are more aware of other kids in the chapel, there is a little peer pressure in their age set to act mature and quiet in Mass. I can’t prove it, but I think its true.

In my experience, the opposite is true at Novus Ordo Mass. Everyone is always dancing the hand motions to “Peace is Flowing like a River” or the rhythm section of the Liturgical Band is taking a drum solo of the “Holy Holy bang bang clang drumroll Holy”, so the peer pressure is to act like a loud screaming child so you can shout down the guitar section. Ahem. In my humble opinion, of course. 😃

But you’ll be fine. As will your little cherub. Go a few weeks in a row (at least 3) so that he can learn what to expect.

I attend the Tridentine Mass of the FSSP, and what you have in mind is exactly what the families at our church do. Traditional families are big, with lots of kids, and the children are incredibly well behaved at Mass. The young children who have difficulty keeping their focus are taken to the children’s room by a parent so they don’t disrupt the prayer focus of the Mass. Sounds like you have it figured out just fine. Welcome to the Tridentine Mass! It is the most incredible prayer experience I have ever had at a Mass; it is truly where heaven meets earth.

Just curious, are you an "evil, stupid trad", or are you mocking trads in general?

I’m not mocking trads in general. I like to consider myself one.

That said, there is a significant minority that I have stumbled across that think children either should sit perfectly still and not make a peep, or should be left at home with a babysitter, which I find ridiculous.

What you said is inflammatory - you are painting all trads with the same brush - which does nothing for this forum, if you know its history.

What? That’s inflammatory?

“may be some” is now equivalent to “every trad in the whole wide world, past, living, and future”?

Uh, no. I didn’t paint all trads with a brush. I painted some trads with a brush. Which is why I used the word “SOME”.

And it DOES do something for this forum, because the OP will probably run into SOME of these trads at his parish.

Again the word “some” is NOT equal “all”.

I think that by and large you will find a lot more kids at the Traditional Mass then in most Pauline Masses. The reason should be pretty clear. Most Traditionalists that I know do not engage in birth control and tend to have larger families. Many of those who attend the Pauline Mass, in the exercise of conscience as they say, do make use of birth control and have smaller families. Not all, but a lot.

Don’t worry, you’ll do fine.👍 Despite what many of those who loathe and despise the Traditional Mass on this forum will tell you ad nauseum, most Traditionalists are not evil, anal retentive, simple minded pharisees interested only in strict observance of antiquated rules

I didn’t take my 3 year old son the first few times because I was learning the Mass. My priest got after me for that and said I had an obligation to bring him (of course he was right). Anyway, I started taking him and believe me he was a nightmare for everyone! But they were all very understanding and really embraced my son as a community. I got lots of good advice and some really nice books (they tried really hard to keep him quiet as did I). So here we are about 1 1/2 years later and we know lots of church members and my son is very well behaved (most of the time :o). It takes time and you just have to keep at it. Ignore the ones who would give you bad looks (this happens at OF as well, believe me). You will likely find that many people with large families will welcome you very warmly. Even the families I think do so well with their children sometimes ask me how I get my son to behave so well, so you never know what the other parents are dealing with.

What works for my son is taking things for him to do. He likes to draw and write so I take some colored pencils and index cards (they fit neatly into my purse). You can take some picture books and some quiet toys. Give him one thing at a time so that he has something new to do every 10-15 minutes. And of course take him outside for a minute then bring him back. Trust me, my son was a live wire, but he now loves to wear a full suit and does really well. Just stick with it.

Nice try, but it is still derogatory to traditional Catholics.
But yeah, forget it. It’s the same old stuff here in the trad forum. Which is why most of us are long gone. I’m not even sure what made me pop back in after such a long absence. It looks like the whole forum has lost the majority of its users now, anyway.

The priest will not banish you from the church if you kid acts up. kids are kids there going to do whatever they want especially a younger child. by the way just for my own curiosity why are you going to a latin mass?
