I almost hesitate to post this as I do not want to hear about how much better one form of Mass is then the other. I always attend the NO and I am completely fine with it as they have always been very reverent.
However I post this to provide encouragement for those of you that prefer the TLM…so please be respectful.
I go to daily Mass at a different parish then my home parish as its closer to my work. Last week they were doing renovations so Mass was in the parish center. This week when the church was open again I see what those renovations are. The altar rails have been extended on both sides. It appears that the back altar has been raised…maybe it’s always been that way I’m not sure…with 3 steps up. The carpet was taken out of the santuary. In talking with someone at my home parish last night they indicated that the priest of the other parish was learning the TLM. Therefore I believe that parish is going to start offering the TLM. It might be on a limited basis…but that is better than none…right?
Awesome! I answer why below, via help:
I’ve only been to one Latin High mass myself, and one low one. If you can only get your husband to go once, I would make sure it’s a Latin High Mass one sunday. A friend who is looking at religion for the first time in her life joined me at a high mass, and we didn’t have any rubrics or anything. When it was done, she turned to me and said, “That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. How come these pews are not full? If I could, I would experience this every day for the rest of my life.”
The Extraordinary form has a unique beauty; you should allow yourself and your husband to experience it in all it’s splendor at least once. : )
Your friend and I share the same view. Half the time I wish I could just move in to the sanctuary.
A friend of mind is a cradle Catholic, and he, somehow, grew up with the Latin Mass in his Catholic High School in Texas. He thinks it’s the most boring time ever spent. I imagine his memory is colored by the rebellion of his youth, but he does attend the OF, though he insists on only going to “his” parish, which is 3 hours away, which means Christmas and Easter, or when visiting the family. Obviously people like him stand no benefit superficially.
I think the option, and even the mystique of the formerly-perceived taboo, will be a great tool of evangelization in the community. In many ways, certain renderings of the OF can be a little “too” tangible, a little too worldly, a little less heavenly- causing forgetfulness of certain timeless and eternal truths, promises, and hope. Mundane? Even a poorly chosen topic, or poorly worded homily on an otherwise sound topic can render this effect, including in an EF Mass. It is ultimately what the individual celebrant, and the communal attitude of the worshipers choose to make the Mass. The validity of the Form, in either, is not really in question in my mind, for I have forced myself to stop questioning it. I realized how out of control one could become by offering the chance of rebelling against the Holy Father in terms of the central-mechanism of the Church in worship- the Mass. Once that is in question, anything and everything is a target. It becomes total war against the Church.
I think the offering of a choice, in the hope and trust in the Priests and Bishops who lead, to follow the will of the Holy Father, and allow a fuller community following, is great.
At this stage, I have resigned myself to obedience in the matter, though searching and questioning is not ruled out, so long as to not question disrespectfully. I would challenge anyone who does otherwise to prove themselves smarter than the Church and the Pope, for what results in being questioned at the end is the authority. Do that and it’s game over. That’s giving Satan leverage to rip you away from God and His love.
A friend of mine in RCIA exclusively attends the OF, though he can see my own love and growth through the EF. He does want to check it out, but I have increasingly cracked down on down-talking of the OF in his presence, and focus more on a desire to see more display of reverence and sound teaching. I can think of no situation when sound teaching and reverence are a bad thing.
