I thought I would put this here, because I can. 🙂 In the Old Testament, the three people meet Abraham when one tells him he will father a son (Isaac). Is this the Trinity, or three angles, or something else? I don’t know and I don’t know if the Church has an official interpretation.

In the Byzantine tradition, the vison of the three angels is called “The Hospitality of Abraham” and is the proper icon of the Holy Trinity.

This incident is considered a figure of the Trinity. Abraham bowed down and addressed the collectively as “my Lord–YHVH”.

I remember reading in Augustine’s City of God that it was Jesus himself speaking to Abraham, along with the angels. I’ll have to look it up later to confirm or deny my faulty memory!🙂

The angels seen as the Trinity is a typological readng of the story.
