I just finished reading Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church, by H.W. Crocker III. It is an excellent history of the Church, focusing mainly on the history of the Papacy and the
struggles the Church has had to survive throughout its history.

The book reminded me of something Hillaire Belloc referred to in his work How the Reformation Happened. Belloc was expanding on his thesis that the Church is a foreign entity in this world, and has never been free from either external threat or internal strife. He relates how Napolean Bonaparte threatened an emissary from the Pope, Pius VII, with the total destruction of the Catholic Church. The Cardinal snorted, and responded that if eighteen hundred years of effort by priests and bishops hadn’t destroyed the Faith, what made Napolean think he could succeed?

Just a thought.

I have had Triumph sitting on my coffee table for several months. So I was glad to see your post. I will need to read it.

I found it easy reading and enjoyed reading it. It may be a bit light in some areas, but I don’t have time, or ambition, to read something deeper.

Yes, Triumph is an awesome book. After reading it and seeing all the troubles the Church has faced within and without during it’s 2,000 year history, shows that the Holy Spirit really has prevented the gates of Hell from prevailing against it.

I have given this book to seven individuals who have come into the Church in the last 2 years - kind of like here is YOUR family history. Three read it and fell in love with the Church all over again. Two enjoyed it. Two have not read it yet.
