Hello:D
I am 99.9999999999999999999
convinced about not leaving. :o
I do love the Church but from what I have read I have been what could be called a Cafeteria Catholic. Not good, I know.
I have a couple of sticking points yet. My brother-in-law sent me an e-book that is putting a lot of doubts in my mind. I have looked for things debunking it but have not found any.
I do not want to post the website; that is against the rules or is it?
I guess I could take PM’s and direct people to it and so forth and then you could let me know?? I have read this site a great deal but the information is a little general. I ahve read books but that information is pretty general too.
I do not want to get in trouble on my first post but would appreciate any help.
Thanks guys!!

You are not supposed to post any chat room or forum websites. If you are still unsure, send it to me by pm.

More than likely, you can post it and we can discuss it.

Mason1971,
Let the facts hold true. I was raised with little or no real faith. I was baptized Catholic when I was a baby but parents divorced shortly after so mom never had faith. I met my wife at age 20 and before we married at age 23 I did all the things to become Catholic. Even though she was raised Catholic we only went on holidays and never understood anything. Christmas 06 we found our home and actually go all the time and are heavily involved. Did I mention we are no longer Catholic…I’m not saying they are wrong I just believe I am right. If you want a free bible study let me know and I’ll send it your way…Just pray about it Christ died for us to be saved not condemned or excommunicated because our marriage didn’t work out, I am still married almost 20 yrs now. God want you to have a relationship with HIM…Try reading Roman 10 focus on verse 9 but read around it, feel it, mean it, give it all to God and see how you come out.
God Bless
Doug

Why would you be reading an anti-catholic site in the first place? Why would you want to make yourself open to the nonsense they spew? Doesn’t sound like you BIL wants you to continue with your Catholic interests/studies. I am going to PM you because my curiosity is peaked.

Every minute of every day Satan is trying to destroy the Catholic Church. Every where you look there is someone outside of the Church that dangles a carrot and says “I am right” the Catholic Church is wrong. How could it be wrong when it was established 2,000 years ago by Christ himself. For 1500 years we were all Catholic. Do not be deceived by all the lies about the Church. Satan has unleased thousands of accusation against the Church but none of them can stand up to the truth. If you are weak in your knowledge of the Church you become a prime target for those who want to pull you away from salvation and the truth. They are very good at deceiving the unlearned and confused. Stand fast to what is good. The Catholic Church has endured these attacks since 1500 and can answer every one of them. You only have to seek out the answer. Coming here is a beginning.

Welcome to CAF Doug 👋 … I am not sure why you are here … from your two posts [yes - that is not much to judge by but alas, it is all you have ] my guess  is you believe that you can “Sway” the beliefs of Catholics here and turn them away from the Church that Christ established …

A word to the wise … there is little if any “raw meat” here for you to influence with your message that the Catholic Church is wrong in handing on an authentic Christianity, fell into apostasy or that the Pope thinks he is God on earth … The catholics you will find here are well educated and knowledgable about Christ, the Holy Scriptures, Christianity, and history … if you truly were a ‘catholic’ *

Hang around - with an open mind 🙂 you might learn somethings about Christ, His Church and the Bible … hang on though - you might be in for a ride you did not expect 👍*

YADA,
Thanks for the welcome. You are right I might learn as we all learn everyday. Sway is not the point the point might be to save someone you, me, them we’ll see how it all works out. May God Bless Us All

I will wait to see if the PMs can help me.
I do not think it is wrong to read information to answer my questions. doubts I have

I thank you for your reply. I am emailing the author back and forth. I invited him to this forum but he declined stating he is too busy. I thought you raised a very good point. I used it 😃
He said there have always been dissenting groups that were outside of the established Church. Jan Huss-who I looked up–Paulicians–I still think it is a good point but I do not think we can say every Christian was a Catholic for 1500 years–but I also do not think we NEED to say that. Thanks for your support 👍

I received a few PM’s. You were helpful. I don’t know. Maybe there is a website to refute it??
Thanks guys:D

It is the part about the Assumption of our Blessed Mother–how no one talked about it for like 300 years. Does not seem possible it could have happened and people not talk about it all the time.
This is something we have to believe though–right??
I am also not so sure about the venerating of images. It seems like early Christians were really opposed to it.
I do not want to leave the Church–I am not going to–but as I become more than a “cafeteria Catholic”–I really want to believe:o

TRUE! Satan’s attacks on the Catholic Church didn’t start at the year 1500, though, but much before as well. Satan doesn’t need to attack the non-Catholic faiths as hard, because he has already prevailed at least in part against those. Satan will never prevail against the Catholic Church, and this has to be the most frustrating thing of all for Satan. The only way he gets partial victories is on with the individuals who believe his lies against the Catholic Church.

Doug,
Prostelytizing is not allowed on this forum. There is no salvation outside the Church, which has the fullness of revealed Truth and protects it. You have already distorted the Truth. You can’t do it by yourself, as you are trying.

YADA,
Thanks for the welcome. You are right I might learn as we all learn everyday.
Stick around… You will learn much. 🙂 You will find that many of the Catholics that come here are very well versed in their faith…and will freely share their knowledge. It could well be of great benefit to you.

Doug, as MDK pointed out in his prior post… “recruiting” is not a permissible thing in these forums. These are forums owned and run by Catholics…but all are welcome.

Just so you know, Catholics are “saved”. We have our Salvation in Jesus Christ. We know it well. We have no need of being “saved” otherwise. If you ever were a Catholic you would know that. (If only I had a nickel for every “internet former catholic”…I could pay cash for a Lamborghini Countache!") Its possible that whatever theology you ascribe to sees things differently, but then that’s the way of the world…

I wouldn’t be too concerned about that site. It immediately brings itself into question regarding its won veracity or credibility. Given that it uses the “Infancy Gospel of James” as a source for “proofs”… That gospel was banned ages ago… in Jerome’s time.

There are many different opinions regarding the gospel… written by an unknown author… here are a couple of links to opinions regarding that particular issue: college.usc.edu/news/may_2006/hock.html
gnosis.org/library/inftoma.htm
nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Infancy-Gospel-of-James To say the least…one must not just simply buy into a line…because it makes a statement of differentiation as a “justification” or proof of anything.
It is the part about the Assumption of our Blessed Mother–how no one talked about it for like 300 years. Does not seem possible it could have happened and people not talk about it all the time.
On this fellow’s site…he says he is quoting from a Catholic Encyclopedia…maybe partly, but with much “editing” to fit his needs. Please feel free to compare… here is the actual Catholic Encyclopedia article courtesy of New Advent: newadvent.org/cathen/02006b.htm Decide for yourself who or what is more “believable”. Actually historians…basing their findings on ancient writings…or a “detractor” of the Church with a pretty clear “agenda”…who has no problem even using a gnostic gospel as “proof” when virtually no-one in Christianity accepts gnostic gospels as more than “fiction”.
This is something we have to believe though–right??
Yes, its Church Dogma. And for myself, its not a problem, as no-one has offered a shred of proof to prove the Church in error. Granted, the Dogma is based on oral traditions…as was all of the Bible originally…so where would there be a problem? The mere fact that it did not have a full chapter dedicated to the issue in the Bible is not at all surprising to me… especially considering the fact that in those days…society as a whole was Patriarchal…and male dominated.
I am also not so sure about the venerating of images. It seems like early Christians were really opposed to it.
As to the “Veneration of Images”… he works fast and loose with quotes…and snippets of scripture and inserting his own opinions as “fact”. But lets deal with some real facts, not opinions:

From here: newadvent.org/cathen/07664a.htm

Its very good reading, and it even explains the viewpoint of the Jews as well as the “early Christians”. In fact…the reality of it is this: “The guy is blowing smoke, and doing nothing but expressing his unlearned and biased opinion to foist an agenda that is disingenuous at best”. 😉

Two questions that obviously must be kept apart are those of the use of sacred images and of the reverence paid to them. That Christians from the very beginning adorned their catacombs with paintings of Christ, of the saints, of scenes from the Bible and allegorical groups is too obvious and too well known for it to be necessary to insist upon the fact. The catacombs are the cradle of all Christian art. Since their discovery in the sixteenth century – on 31 May, 1578, an accident revealed part of the catacomb in the Via Salaria – and the investigation of their contents that has gone on steadily ever since, we are able to reconstruct an exact idea of the paintings that adorned them.* That the first Christians had any sort of prejudice against images, pictures, or statues is a myth (defended amongst others by Erasmus) that has been abundantly dispelled by all students of Christian archaeology.***
I do not want to leave the Church–I am not going to–but as I become more than a “cafeteria Catholic”–I really want to believe:o
That is good. I say it as one who is 58 years old, fell away from the Church in my younger days…(long story)…but did not go to another church, retained my faith in God…and found my way home…and happier than I have ever been. I am a Catholic, and I always will be…maybe not the best, but trying all the same. Do not let people with less than honorable intent get into your mind. They are of no benefit to you or your salvation.

Stick around, have fun, learn!! You will learn much truth here. God Bless you and keep you!!

Mason,
Check your PMs bro. 👍

There’s a lot of that a-C junk on the web and people making money by keeping their congregations fired up by selling them books like that one you apparently have.

Consider one question.

If the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the means of salvation for them, (as it is for us!) then why are they not preaching and teaching about that instead of wasting time on a vitriolic compare and contrast with someone else’s religion?

Isn’t the truth of the Gospel and the influence of the Holy Spirit enough?
