No offense but your account is just anecdotal. There is not facts other than you saying so. I was asking the OP for a study or something that backs up the claim made by No-Fap. Reason is because many doctors tell of the benefits of masturbation. Porn, to me, is take it or leave it. I enjoy it but mostly through reading and not as much through audio or visual.
You seem to be advocating the approach of scientism where everything must be proven by a study. The problem is lots of studies turn out to be invalid and the advice of doctors is constantly changing. We really don’t need a study to tell us that pornography and masturbation are bad.

This may be obvious and oversimplified, but I believe it helps tremendously.

Humans generally want to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Most things we do from a behavioral perspective can be put into one of those categories. You engage in that behavioral because you are seeking pleasure and/or avoiding pain. The same reason people use drugs and alcohol. The problem is, the thing you are using may bring immediate pleasure, but it ALWAYS, without fail, brings pain. That is what you have to focus on–the pain it always brings.

Most people stay focused on the immediate pleasure. When the temptation arises you have to condition yourself to immediately think, “How will I feel afterword? How will I feel about it tomorrow? How long will this temporary pleasure last?” Focus on the pain it brings. Really dwell on the horrific feelings it causes as well as the psychological and social damage it causes.

Also stay focused on the fact that this pain WILL happen. People will think, “Oh, it will be different this time.” But you know in reality it won’t. Ask yourself, “Has this ever made me feel good after the fact? How am I going to feel an hour from now?” Focus on the pain.

Right now your body is wired to focus on the pleasure, you’ve got to rewire it to focus on the pain. Why do people quit smoking? They drown out the craving for immediate pleasure while focusing on the pain of disease and death. You train your brain so that when that thought comes into your brain, it is immediately met with an overwhelming amount of pain, all the pain you have felt and know you will feel if you do it again.

Also, I have known people who got married believing it would “cure” them. It helped some but it did not cure them. They simply moved from using themselves to gain immediate pleasure to using someone else to gain immediate pleasure. They never learned what sex was supposed to be (i.e. it’s not about you). So I do not recommend the marriage route in an attempt to solve the problem.

Pray, focus on the pain, and have a plan for when temptation arises. That usually means finding some other activity that will bring you long-lasting pleasure rather than immediate gratification followed by massive pain.

We live in a culture that has completely perverted what marriage and sex is supposed to be about. Most people don’t even understand what love really is and how people actually stay married. They believe marriage is about some warm, fuzzy feeling you have about someone of the opposite or same sex (yeah, warped). They believe sexual gratification is a natural right of which no one should be deprived. They believe everyone should be allowed to get gratification whenever they want and however they want. Any word to the contrary is seen as archaic and hateful. Yet look at the results this new philosophy has brought us. A regression by any standard.

At least, that’s my two cents. 🙂

Kate - Masturbation & porn for men lead to the following: fornication, objectification of women, and adultery.

Masturbation & porn are gateway sins. Just like marijuana is a gateway drug.

Masturbation is also very addictive. Plus the more you masturbate, the longer it takes to climax. This leads to more porn. Eventually, porn leads to live porn chat rooms – then adultery.

When I was away from the Church, porn almost ruined my life as I was tempted into adultery and spending hundreds of dollars on online porn chats.

Without a study to back it up it means nothing.
With all due respect, even the simple fact that a study appears in a peer-reviewed journal does not mean its conclusions are utterly true and critical thinking can now go out the window.

Studies are not an infallible source of information.

Studies have defects. They can be wrong. They can be flawed. They can be meaningless. They can have their biases and their agendas.

Many studies are really attempting to show a tiny statistical significance that can possibly show that a correlation does not exist by mere chance.

The problem is that, unless one is a specialist, one’s inherent ability to analyze such studies in a sincerely critical way is undermined, sometimes to a greater and sometimes to a lesser extent.

Are you a specialist?

First off, I’m a little leary of Louis de Monfort. I looked into total consecration to Mary a few years back, and his writings on Mary were just too much. Bordering on heresy. And I’ve really never had a devotion to Mary.
Wow.

As as I started my other post …

… with all due respect, you’re 22 years old. The Church in no way would agree with your analysis of de Montfort’s writing, and I hope you will concede that you’re not yet educated enough to simply write off the Church’s judgment as if it was arrived at by a bunch of ignoramuses sitting around playing cards.

de Montfort is not in any way, shape, or form heretical, borderline or otherwise. The Church has judged this to be the case, and we do not judge the Church.

I’m disturbed that a poster, Kate, is aggressively bashing the OP. Obviously we can all see that he wants to solve this problem in his life. Sad to see the backlash.

Anyone who has read in this issue knows the addictive nature of pornography and that there are such things as sexual addictions.

Don’t make fun of the addict. Help him instead, sister.

She does not think there is anything wrong with porn or masturbation, she cant help him. He wants to stop and she is basically saying “What is so wrong with what you are doing?”

That’s like a smoker telling someone who wants to quit, “Ah, don’t worry about. Don’t believe everything they tell you. Enjoy yourself.”

The other smoker says, “But I feel horrible, I can’t breathe, I can’t walk up stairs without losing my breath, I have high blood pressure, all of my possession smell like smoke, and I could be harming others around me.”

“Oh, come on. Get real. Smoking is fun and feels good. It’s not causing those problems.”

“But I want to quit, I don’t like it.”

“It won’t make you feel any better, and then you’ll lose the pleasure of smoking. You don’t want to be in pain do you? Quitting hurts while smoking feels good. You have a right to smoke. Nobody can tell you what to do with your body. You decide what is best for you. They can’t prove it will hurt you in the long run.”

It’s like we’re listening to a conversation between Screwtape and the patient.

The only people I’ve ever met who had given in to porn were not very nice people and they were miserbale in their personal lives. Is it a correlation or causation? I don’t know. I do know that everyone I’ve met who struggles with it are happier people than those who give in to it.

C.S. Lewis said, “Virtue–even attempted virtue–brings light, indulgence brings fog.” And this is coming from the man who said sexual sin may be the most insignificant sin. The original sin–pride–dwarfs it by comparison.

So where are you getting that porn and masturbation are bad? If evidence points to a established conclusion and is supported why not follow the conclusion?

Stories, not studies. There are a lot of stories about being abducted by aliens but little proof.

I am not a specialist. Thing is yes studies can be biased, just like anecdotes.

Show me studies that say there are wrong things with masturbation and I will think on it. Porn is hard only because it has changed so much in the past two decades or so. I can go look up say Rebecca Love and see she is doing quite well for herself because of having to do porn. Heck people I follow on Snapchat doing porn are doing very well. Exercising, living a life of travel, and are normal people. It is this demonization that, to me, is more the problem.

Oh and I am not bashing the OP. I was just asking where the organization got their information. If the OP wants to “quit” masturbation okay.

I do not have a study to show you. I get my matters on FAITH AND MORALS by The Church. Not secular sources. There are studies that say porn leads to long term changes in the brain. Look them up yourself if you are interested.

As for Masturbation, I have never read a study that says they are good or bad either way. It does not matter to me because I follow The Church teaching on it. Why don’t you talk to your priest and tell him of your porn use and see if he says it is okay just because it is porn in story form.

The OP wants help to stop. If you want to start a debate on Porn and masturbation and demand that others show you info that you could try to look up for yourself why dont you start your own thread? Be respectful to the OP and dont de rail his thread just because you do not see anything wrong with what he wants to stop.

Okay OP wants to stop doing a natural act here is something. Take small steps. Start off with like a day then move up to three days then a week. Allow yourself that there will be setbacks and that is fine. The world took millions of years to form so you learning to not pleasure yourself will take time.

What determines an act as “natural”?

What determines an act as “natural”?
Every human has masturbated at one point in their lives. Other animals do it and since we are animals exploring our bodies is natural.
