Hello,
Has anyone read the book by St. Louis de Monfort about true devotion to the blessed virgin? I am considering an act of conscration, but I am having a battle with scruples. This has invaded my dreams even. I am litarlly frightened about this. Has anyone done this? What was your experience from this? Thank You, Tim
 
If you don’t mind sharing–what kind of scruples are you talking about? Scruples against making the consecration or scruples that you won’t do it right or something else?

And I have read it and done the consecration, so I’d like to help you, if I am able. God bless! 🙂
 
I’m reading The Secret of Mary right now…I haven’t gotten to the part about consecration yet.

Not yet. I have a copy, but I am not sure if I should do so whilst only an RCIA Candidate. That is my scuple at the moment. Especially with mortal sin on my soul that cannot be removed until The Easter Vigil , full confession, and my Confirmation into the Church

A year and a half ago, I had a conversion experience. I don’t know where it came from (God, The Spirit, An Angel or Mary). At the time I only knew it was from God and it saved my life. I have just recently after a long battle had the revelation that Jesus is God. Saturday I went to confession and was told to ask Mary for her intercession. I did. And the next day at Church we had a meeting with a Nun and a witness about the consecration. That is when I got the book. I read all of it last night. I was blown away. I’m having a problem feeling like I would be abandoning my relationship with Christ or that this is where he has led me. The whole time the enemy is nagging and confusing me. Did you have a struggle or was it plain to see. I was warned by my Priest that this may happen. I don’t know if I’m being pushed or pulled. Tim

Please re-read the book again, and slower. The concept is grounded in coming to Christ through his Mother. We Venerate Mary, and we Worship Christ. The book needs to be studied carefully. And Mother Mary is patient and understanding:)
 
The concept that all graces come through Mary and dispensed as she pleases because she always does the will of the son is what got me worked up. I see it as truth and understand it. I guess I am still struggling with the humility of it. Because of the intervention I had, it is a real attack of the senses for me. I only saw it as God. I could not keep the original experience because of the fraility of my soul and the spiritaul warfare that I have gone through the last year. The fall from that experience feels tremedous and I now see the need for a mediator. When this first happened, pride had me convinced I didn’t need anything as a mediator. This is how the enemy took something that was great and destroyed it before I ever knew what happened. Since then, I have accepted Christ as my redeemer and the Church as the body of Christ in which the sacraments afford graces to us. Now I am realising that Mary is the perfect way to bring merits to the Lord which could be rejected by my offering of them because of my sin. This is something I need to stop on and pray about, but it just feels so (name removed by moderator)arative. I’m litarlly shaking as I type. Tim
 
It seems like you are in a hurry to make a decision one way of another. IF you feel at all uncomfortable, simply wait to decide. Mary is very patient, and she certainly is not jealous.

I am very devoted to Our Blessed Mother also, but this is the first I’ve heard of this consecration thing. I will certainly look into it, but I will not make a decision until I know all about it.

The Church has no teaching about this concept, so you are perfectly free to accept or reject it. I think you are making far too big a deal out of this, so it is probably wise for you just sit back and wait. Continue to pray and ask for Our Blessed Mother’s help. She will continue to help you no matter what.

This is a very new concept, there is absolutely no need to be hasty in making any sort of decision. Most folks have never even heard about it. I first saw it a day or two ago, and I’ve been Catholic for over 50 years !

Excellent post.

I completed the consecration. In my opinion, every step of the process needs to be done with much prayerful contemplation. It is not to be done hastily - be ready to purge some attachments from your life. If you are serious, the Blessed Mother will strengthen you for Her Son.

I have read the book a few times now, (I always re-read it again before I renew my consecration each year), I highly recommend this book and its coresponding practices/consecration, (and I recommend that you read the preface and introductions beforehand as well.) 👍

I would say that you should re-read the book (you’ll always get more out of it this way, trust me) St. Louis talks about scruples and why you need not have them. (There is a reason the enemy would be nagging you while reading this book - if it wasn’t bringing you closer to Christ then the enemy would have no reason to temp you in that manner.)
 
What kind of consecration are we talking about?? :confused:

I haven’t read the book and have no clue what people are talking about…

Actually, it’s not at all a new concept. St. Louis-Marie de Montfort lived in the 17th into the 18th century. Popes, including John Paul II, have heartily endorsed his writings about Mary and gone through his consecration to her. It is new to you, but not new to the Church. 🙂

It is consecration to Jesus through Mary. Mary serves as our intercessor, guide, helper, and example. The book is quite intense and deep–it is spiritual meat that I wouldn’t recommend to new Catholics (until they understand more fully the relationship between Jesus and Mary and have been grounded in the Faith).

TOP, I would recommend that if True Devotion to Mary is too difficult for you to understand and take in at this time that you set it aside and come back to it once you’ve practiced your Catholic faith for a couple of years. Do more reading about the Marian teachings and pray for understanding of them and then tackle de Montfort’s writings, once again.

I don’t think that these events took place as they did by accident. I will try to do the prayers which include the prayers to the Spirit for guidance and see what happens. My wife is reading the book now and I’m not saying either way about it til I hear her reaction. She is a grounded Catholic and I respect her opinion. Thanks again, Tim

By the way, if you decide to do the consecration, the next one starts on Nov. 5th and ends on Dec. 8th (Feast day of the Immaculate Conception)
 
Yes, my parish is having seminars on it during this time for the start on 11/5. BTW , I also have a book on the preparation for the total consecration according to St. Louis. The daily outline of prayers are in it. Thanks, Tim:)
 
True Devotion to Mary is a spiritual classic, and I have found it very valuable.

I made the consecration many years ago, and since have made it about five more times. Some people make it every year, I have made it every few years. It is somewhat like going on a retreat to do the daily prayers and reflections. There are many blessings given for your efforts to make this Consecration.

I can’t think of a better place to go to Jesus to than in the heart of His Mother. She is His perfect disciple, and is our Mother in the order of grace.
 
It may have been around for awhile but it is certainly NOT an article of faith and following it, is completely optional. To say the least it may be a somewhat obscure practice. I was brought up in Catholic schools and not once was this practice mentioned. I don’t question its legitimacy, but it is not widely taught.

I have nothing against these practices, and may do so myself down the road. However the OP appears to have some legitimate hesitantcy about joining this practice, so I think it would be wise for him not to get into something that he may not be ready for.

He should certainly not jump into something that makes him feel so uncomfortable. It may be great for you and some others but it may not be right for him at this time.
 
I am reading True Devotion to Mary right now. What a powerful book! It’s really made me stop and think as some of it is very new to me - but it makes sense the more I ponder it.

It does have Imprimatur…
 
Apparantly, God revealed to St. Louis that this work was inspired by God (what they means exactly, I don’t know) and that the adversary would try to keep it out of the hands of the world. And the book was lost for some 200 years, I hear until someone found it and brought it to a local Bishop who then brought it to the Vatican where it was approved.

I’d like to read it soon, though I admit, I have been putting it off out of fear. I feel like I might misunderstand it and just get really confused.
