What is true feminism?

List 10 characteristics of true feminism.

IYHO

D.

  1. Keeping your integrity and Godly but humble character in front of your beauty.

  1. Honoring one’s own beliefs and intelligence as did Abigail, Rahab and the woman whose son Elisha brought back to life.
  2. Pursuing a career that is needed and suits one’s talents, skills and knowledge, as did the Proverbs 31 woman, Lydia, Deborah, Priscilla and many other Biblical women. Doing a good job and fully expecting to be compensated and given credit.
  3. Knowing that God cares about one’s life, health and well-being, as Jesus showed He cared for the daughter of Jairus, the woman with the issue of blood, and many other women.
  4. Joining or even starting discussions of things that matter, as did the Samaritan woman, Mary of Bethany, Abigail, Rahab, Deborah, Hulda, Martha, Elizabeth, Anna, and many more Biblical women.
  5. Addressing others with respect and expecting the same in return, as Solomon bowed and prostrated himself to speak to his mother though he was an adult. Not answering to whistles, chirps and insulting pet names if one doesn’t feel like it.
  6. Chastity outside marriage and choice of one’s husband.
  7. Giving advice and sharing wisdom and fully expecting to be honored for one’s wisdom, as did the wise woman in at least one Old Testament battle, as well as Abigail and others.
  8. Using the gifts God gave one, even prophecy and even when male prophets are available, as did Mary the mother of Jesus, Elizabeth, Anna, Hulda, Deborah, Miriam and others.
  9. Speaking up for what one knows and refusing the images and labels others apply to one, as did Mary the mother of Jesus and Hannah the mother of Samuel.
  10. Taking crimes against women and girls seriously,a s did the people of Israel after the horrific child killing in the Book of Judges.

the biggies- chastity outside and within marriage.
NO ABORTION OR CONTRACEPTION- they are tools of control

Wow! I think you covered this extremely well.

  1. She fears the LORD.
  2. She is strong and knows the dignity of each person (including herself).
  3. She shares her smiles and happiness.
  4. She reaches out to the poor or those in need.
  5. She plans ahead and cares for those whom she loves.
Stuff like this comes to my mind. 🙂

The "Feminism " today as the pro-choice, abortion rights is actually “anti-feminism” and a lot more.

From the dictionary ; feminism is from 1851 but meant at first “State of being feminine”
then sense of “advocacy of women’s rights” is from 1895.
Feminist is from 1894.

the biggies- chastity outside and within marriage.
NO ABORTION OR CONTRACEPTION- they are tools of control
These things are also compatible with misogyny.

It seems like there has to be more to ‘true feminism’ than controlling female sexuality and reproduction.

There are. strngrnrth pretty much covered it all. I was throwing in two things I thought were missing.

Is there a difference between the words feminism and femininity? Seems like y’all are defining the latter.

The former is, IMO, a word best left in history’s dust bin. To me, it means:
The idea that the mysoginists of history were mostly right. It really IS more important to have a career than have a family. Raising children in a loving and nurturing environment really IS less important than becoming a law partner, an elected official, a surgeon, etc. Caring for the weak, nurturing the sick, instructing the ignorant, mending the broken… These are all tasks for losers. Feminism is the idea that if women want to be respected they need to abandon the best traits of women and adopt the worst traits of men.

As for me, as I age I become more convinced that women have always been the REAL builders of culture and civilization. Men just build the skeleton that civilization hangs on. Women have always done the things that make it alive and worth living.

‘True Feminism’?

Not having to live stereotypes, no matter whose.

I have heard this theory before.

It kind of reminds me of military hierarchy to be honest.

Yes, the generals, talented commanders, and occasional heroes get most of the glory in an army at war. But the unacknowledged common soldiers do most of the work, and without them there would be NO army.

You do your own point a disservice. Every general starts out as a wet behind the ears lieutenant and does his share of unglamorous crummy work.

Not so for the historical mysoginists. How many changed diapers, corrected spelling homework or bandaged skinned knees in their youth.

You presume I defend the 1950s order of things. Partly my fault I suppose for leaving too much out. GK Chesterton once said “Reformers are always right about what is wrong, but he is generally wrong about what is right.”

Feminists rightly observe that women for an awfully long time have been taken advantage of and taken for granted by men. What they failed to recognize is that our currency based economy came about in that era and structurally economically favors the roles that men are predisposed to play. An awful lot of women followed Gloria Steinem et al and found nothing but misery and emptiness in “manly” success. Wouldn’t it have been better if they had found a way to get society to recognize the contributions that women have ALWAYS made instead of joining the mysoginists in denigrating them?

CEOs, surgeons and attorneys surely play a role in civilization. But the real revolution will occur when we recognize that teachers, nurses and moms contribute as much or more. Probably won’t happen this side of heaven. Culture and civilization got ugly often enough when it was just men who denigrated those contributions. Now that feminist women do it too, things sure ain’t getting better. Or haven’t you noticed?

It’s hard to express just how lucky we women are to have men to tell us what’s wrong with feminism.

Well of course, now your thinking like a conservative/traditionalist Catholic.

After all, who is LESS qualified to make decisions for women than women?

The traditional answer: no one.

I agree with this. I feel like the problem with “feminism” in terms of Gloria Steinem, etc…is that they placed women in competition with men. And as a result…in order to compete, women have been forced to almost adopt male characteristics and abandon the feminine. I like your observation Manualman - or analogy I should say between civilization and culture. I don’t see anything wrong with what you are saying…in fact I find it flattering. To say men and women are different is just pointing out the obvious. I realize you’re not saying “get back in the kitchen” but rather, quite simply - “hey, men and women are different and it’s time women were respected for being women - but they shouldn’t have to give up their nature in order have equality…and they shouldn’t try to be men.”

Because guess what? We’re not! And so what? Can’t we just appreciate our differences!?!?! 🤷
