True love is a choice, correct?

True love is not a choice, not at all. If it were, there would be no broken hearts.
Well, it’s not as if because someone chooses to love in a given instant that they are sure to choose to love in the next hour, or the next day, or the next year. “True love” in the sense of a being a choice is limited by time and space (unless you are talking about Christ.)

That’s the whole point of love being a choice. You have to choose to love second by second, minute by minute, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… It’s not a once and for all thing. It is a series of ongoing choices to act for the good of another.

That’s why when one picks a spouse it is important to pick someone who one will want to continue choosing to love.

Love is like being a hawk upon the ground, who sees the sky and immediately is drawn to crouch and with a cry launch itself upward, beating its wings, to reach the heights. There it sails in much complacency and delight.

There is no choice without the drawing. The good is desirable and draws our will. We fly to union with the beloved.

(note: I use “complacency” in an obsolete sense, not the usual modern sense)

I smile at your thought, but if someone loved truly, that person wouldn’t want to stop just because of lack of quick reciprocation. Then, if someone saw the other loved him truly, it wouldn’t always lead to a choice to reciprocate.

Or are you talking about the fact that people change and they leave their loved ones?

So Jesus’ Passion was a warm, fuzzy feeling?
What kind of answer is this? You ask a question about love, citing your relationship with your girlfriend, and now you are talking about Jesus’ love? So what is this thread about–boyfriends/girlfriends or Jesus?

That’s part of the problem in this thread, IMO.

I think some people are thinking this is strictly about romantic love and/or that we are using “choice” in terms of choosing a mate.

But the statement, “True love is a choice,” refers to us having the kind of love that Jesus had for us. So it applies to spouses, children, parents, friends, strangers, people who hate us, etc.

Who knows what the OP’s girlfriend’s mother was thinking. 🤷
