My brother has recently left the Catholic Church at the age of 47 after living his whole life as a Catholic. He has become a full blown Baptist quoting scripture and criticizing the Catholic church in true Baptist fashion. I find myself constantly defending the faith. One specific issue that we go back and forth about is the scripture of John 3:16. My Catholic Bible says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him MIGHT not perish but MIGHT have eterna. life.”
His bible King James Version says SHALL not perish and SHALL have eternal life. I asked him why they changed the wording to read shall instead of might. The word MIGHT to me tells me that I not only have to believe but I have to do the works of God as well such as good deeds, following the commandments, etc. in order to get into heaven. He believes that Shall means the same as Might when we are talking about the bible and that you will get into heaven strictly by believing.
My question is…Does the might in our bible mean the same thing as the shall in their bible? When our bible uses the word Might…does that mean the same thing as shall or will go to heaven? Thank you for your help?
