K-McD:
In using your reasoning from above, (which happens to be very good) what does the description “EHªYEH” mean? How does it describe God?
That He has set up a system of Divine Providence which relates in a special manner to the nation of Israel.

“I will be” with the Jews during this trouble (in Egypt) “and I will be” with the Jews during the future trouble (this current exile).

It is mostly a summary of the way the nation of Israel experiences Divine Providence during exile.

Shalom!

About this form “Tzevaos” - what happened to the form ending in a “t/th” ? I’ve noticed that this happens to other words ending in “ath” - is this a development pecular to USA pronunciation of Hebrew, or a shift from Biblical Hebrew to modern Hebrew, or what ?

All information on this point will be gratefully received 🙂 ##

Ending a word such as “tzevaos” with a “th” is a mistransliteration based on the Yemenite dialect, which while being the truest dialect isn’t the standard for transliterating.

א = a
ב = b/v
ג = g
ד = d
ה = h
ו = v/u
ז = z
ח = ch
ט = t
י = y/i
כ = kh
ל = l
מ = m
נ = n
ס = s
ע = a
פ = p/ph
צ = tz
ק = q
ר = r
ש = sh/ss
ת = s/t

yeey! We’re learning hebrew.

BTW, the names attributed to God are all truths. He is the Great “I AM.” Praise and glory to His Name!

Lisa N:
I have a friend who’s a JW and her husband a cradle Catholic converted to JW at age 59. They make a BIG deal that God’s name is Jehovah. That must be why they named their denomination after their name for God.
This contention of the JW’s once came up in a thread on a beliefnet forum where Christians were debating the Jehovah Witnesses. I saved this post from a Protestant Minister that wrote under the name “agabus”: YHWH - Nomen Tetragramaton … we don’t know the actual pronuniciation.

[agabus comments on the above]: I am not a language scholar, but from everything that I have read, I concur with this statement. No one really knows how to pronounce the Tetragrammaton.

What is important is that we know the meaning of the Tetragrammaton, and the meaning can be summed up by “I AM”, when “I AM” includes the proper ontological sense of the statement.

YHVH is not the proper name of God the Father. It is the proper name of God, the one God, and there are three person in the one God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

It is significant that Jesus identifies himself with “I AM”.

There is a long tradition of pronouncing the Tetragrammaton as Jehovah (at least in the west). I have no objection to that, after all, the word “Jesus” is only a western pronunciation of his Aramaic name. I think we can legitimately keep the word Jehovah as well as Jesus.

What I do object to is the false belief of the Jehovah Witnesses that Jehovah is the name of God the Father, and that Jesus never said that he was I AM. John’s Gospel is rendered unintelligible by denying Jesus’ identification with the Tetragrammaton.

Hello

you may scoff, laugh, even call me a heretic for saying this

however, my friends (Occult-ists) have said the reason god and other less mighty and FAR less holy ones (demons/ghosts/whatever…) choose not to reveal their name to humans because once we have the true name we have power over them (this is even written in the egyptian mythos) however i have not met the man (god) yet so when i get there ill have to ask him

That was a pretty common belief in the ancient Near-East, and is likely the reason behind the prohibition on taking the name of God in vain.

Umm, not quite. In Hebrew -]I AM /-]THAT/WHO -]I AM /-]is “Ehyeh asher ehyeh.” In that utterance, “ehyeh” is the 1st-person of the form for the verb “to be.” The word “yahweh” is considered by every scholar I have read to be the 3rd-person masculine form of that verb. It certainly fits the pattern.

Here is Exodus 3:14 in transliterated Hebrew:

Wa-yo’mer 'Elohiym 'el- Mosheh 'EHªYEH 'ªSHER 'EHªYEH Wa-yo’mer koh to’mar libneey Yisraa’eel 'EHªYEH shªlaachaniy 'ªleeykem

Word-for-word translation: "And-said God to-Moses -]I-AM THAT I_AM/-]. And-he-said “Thus you-shall-say to-sons of-Israel, -]‘I-AM /-]sent-me to-you.’”

DaveBj
[To finish off this great beginning…]

The Hebrew root for the phrase “to be” is “hayah”:

Hayah = to be
ehyeh = I will be
Yah = I am

The Father was not yet “what” he needed to be for his children.

…The Father said to Moses, “I will be what[ever] I [will/need to] be” [for my people]. So you will notice that the “imperfect” (incomplete/ “in progress”) form of “hayah” was used: EHYEH.

As stated above by Dave, people redirected the name into the 3rd-person, but “yahweh” is incorrect. The Father had/has a plan that is “in progress” which means he is not yet finished, and because all Hebrew names suggest particular “status/function/action” his name can not be in the “complete” status/function/action just yet, but in “in progress” status/function/action: “Yeh”.

“weh” (with “e”) is a transliteration of the letter “a”, as in “wah” (thought to be a hard “a”): “Yehwah”

The “u” is often not pronounced (because it’s “breathed”), so the letter is mistakenly left out from “hu”…

The Father’s name is “Yeh-hu-wah”.

Then the Father became “Salvation” (shu-wah) through his Son…but we also know that “Salvation” is not yet “complete” until the Son of Man comes again and destroys sin and death, so…

The Son’s name is “Yeh-shu-wah”.

Finally, (and probably the most overlooked) the Son told his disciples that he would ask the Father to send another helper. We call his name “the Holy Spirit”, but this is not what Yeshua says.
John 14:26] But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Most read this passage to mean “in [Christ’s] authority”, but in biblical times one’s name also carried one’s authority (as they were interchangeable)…so the Holy Spirit essentially has the same name as Christ and the Father (with a variation). Holy Spirit’s name reflects the “completion” of “Salvation”, so…

The Holy Spirit’s name is “Yah-shu-wah”.

All three persons essentially share the same name. “But is this conclusion supported?” Yes it is!
Matthew 28:19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Notice that the passage does not say “in the names (plural) of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”, but uses the “singular”.

There is only one name…one name that is above every name.

I was told that Jews dont call God jehova and some brothers in truth i.e (catholics) told me its not the true name of God so what is ? Is it Abba , Elohim Sabaoth , Yaweh. i know that God is love and that Jesus is lord and that the spirit gives life Im just wondering also how do jehova/W deal with this I know they belive a lie but one so profound ???
sette, christians don’t get told by people. They get taught by God.

Exodus 3:15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the Israelites: Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My Name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
