NonDenom:
Hi
I’m not wanting to argue any point. This site just makes alot of point of interest about the pope and what the Catholic church believes. I was asking what you thought about the things they
say, after you have read them.
Thanks
This website several typical misunderstandings that protestants have regarding infallibility and the Papal office. I also think that some common mistakes that are made by protestants are made here. For instance, one thing that I notice a lot of, being all of my in-laws are Baptist or NonDenominational (which is just a code word for Assemblies of God), is that they tend to use Pauls writings over Jesus’ own words. Peter of course warns us about how the ignorant will twist Pauls words to their own destruction. This website writes
James Cardinal Gibbons, a Catholic Archbishop said, “Jesus our Lord, founded but one Church, which He was pleased to build on Peter. Therefore, any church that does not recognize Peter as its foundation stone is not the Church of Christ, and therefore cannot stand, for it is not the work of God.” (The Faith of Our Fathers, p. 82). The apostle Paul said, “For other foundation no one can lay, but that which has been laid, which is Christ Jesus” (1 Cor. 3:11). There is no other foundation but Christ! Therefore, any church which does not recognize Christ alone as the foundation stone cannot be the church of Christ.
This is a perfect example. Paul is correct in proclaiming Jesus the foundation of our faith. When we read the whole passage that is quoted from Corinthians we see that Paul is talking about Christ being the foundation of our faith. The good Cardinal is speaking of Peter as foundation of the Church that Christ established. There is a big difference here.
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. 14 Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
MATT 16: 18 - 19
Another case of protestants taking verses completely out of context and intentionally only quoting parts of a passage in order to make the passage agree with them. So, what are to do: take Pauls words and ignore Christs words or take Christs words and Pauls words both in proper context. When we do, they do not conflict with one another. Jesus is talking about His Church and He gave Peter the Keys and Authority, and Paul is talking about Christ as foundation of our faith.
