I’m surprised that proponents of true liturgical reform/inculturation don’t more often turn to the *Missa Luba * for inspiration on future endeavors of this nature, founded in the Catholic tradition.

For those that don’t know, the Missa Luba is a musical setting for the Roman Mass as it was celebrated in the African Congo, and it was composed and celebrated before Vatican II!

The Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei can be heard here.

More can be heard here.

Pretty cool, huh?

Whatever happned to experimentations like this? Where did we go wrong?

The White Fathers are not Anglicans, they are Catholic - I remember them from my youth.

The Missa Luba is certainly Catholic. I think you may be confusing it with another album, African Sanctus, which was Anglican.

So far as I know, African Sanctus has never been “performed” liturgically. It’s really one of those “concert Masses.”
