There still is a moderate presence, the charismatic presence has definitely shrunk over the years. I’m not charismatic at all, and I feel very comfortable at Steubenville. There are Latin Masses and Tridentine Masses (although not every single week.) I would say most of the people going to Franciscan aren’t charismatic. The University itself is much more saturated in Catholic orthodoxy, I would say than anything else. Although Franciscan is not for everyone.
 
I suggest the new college here in Wyoming, Wyoming Catholic College. I don’t know if it’s on the Newman Guide, but it is listed on the NCR list. It is small, in Lander Wyoming and surround by the beauty of Gods’ creation. HERE is the website.

I wish it had been here when my kids were going to college. It would have been nice for them to be close and have the opportunity to go to a Catholic college. My youngest (5 yo) will have the option which makes me happy…

I thought Ave Maria wasn’t accredited yet? But the plus side if they can’t get accredited or they close down while your friend’s daughter is in college there she’s not responsible for her student loans!
 
I heard from a friend that there is a very large Charismatic movement at Steubenville. I personally do not care much for the Charismatics, so I would avoid it, but to each his own. Can anybody confirm this?

There is a large Charismatic movement at Steubenville, but there’s also a fairly large “Traditionalist” movement (I put this in quotes because I’m not sure that’s how they’d describe themselves)–for instance, I’ve gotten rides to Extraordinary Form Masses in Pittsburgh; they’re starting to have EFs on campus as well. Some who aren’t big on the Charismatic movement might get turned off by Steubenville, but I would say that most types of Catholic can find a group of like-minded people to be friends with.
 
I’m seriously looking into Franciscan. Wyoming Catholic College and Ave Maria aren’t accredited, and I don’t want to attend an unaccredited institution. Franciscan looks like it has several interesting classes. Also, I just like the idea of being in a community where people believe the same things I do. I’ve never known many Catholics and I think I would enjoy being around those who are similarly minded and live in an environment that nurtures my faith rather than tries to argue me out of it.
For those who are attending here, since it looks like there are a couple, do you have any bits of info that would be important when considering Franciscan?
 
Wyoming Catholic College and Ave Maria are both new colleges. I don’t think any new college begins day one of classes with accreditation. If it works like a Catholic Elementary school, there are things that have to be provided based on curriculum, staff, etc. You can’t give them info you don’t have, thus your school has to be up and running. WCC is seeking their accreditation, and will be accredited, so anyone who attends does not have to worry about going to a school that will never be so.

This is what it says on the WCC’s website:
WCC is seeking accreditation from The American Academy for Liberal Education in Washington, D.C. This organization is recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education as an association that accredits institutions and programs offering general education in the liberal arts. The process can take two years, although a pre-accreditation status can be granted sooner. WCC is also involved in discussions on accreditation with another accrediting organization and will, in any case, assiduously pursue all due requirements in order to achieve accreditation in a timely manner.

Looking at Ave Maria’s website, they are now accredited. The first link that comes up on a search is this:

I hope all who are seeking Catholic colleges find the best fit for the education they are hoping to get. I wish these schools had been around when I was college age. What a wonderful opportunity!

Hey, fellow Eagle (though MUCH younger.) Dh and I both graduated from BC, pre-Doug Flutie by a decade, and loved it. We had excellent theology courses (taught by Jesuits) and appreciated the very strong emphasis on Catholic social teaching. I think that in their headlong rush to reach the very top tier of schools academically (we know how difficult it is to be accepted already) they have forgotten, and are a bit embarrassed by, their roots, especially when it comes to things such as abortion, birth control, etc. That’s Massachusetts for you, though. I hope the pendulum swings the other way, so I can start contributing again.

Great to meet you! I was actually shocked at the “party” aspects of the school. Hopefully they will focus more on the Catholic side of things.

I think there are “party” aspects to any school. I have friends that go to the oft-cited mandatum schools (U Dallas, Steubenville, Ave Maria,) and I think that a few of them ‘party’ more than I do at ND, which everyone and their uncle knows is a big party school. Parties come with the [college] territory–it’s always going to happen when young adults get that first taste of independence.

It all depends on the person. If you’re looking for that scene, you’ll find it anywhere you go. If you want to avoid it, you’ll be able to do that too. I’ve never been to a big college drinking bash, and I’m going into my senior year. And I’ve never sat home on a Friday of Saturday night with nothing to do…

As of about a month ago, Ave Maria IS accredited…

I met a girl the other day who goes there…nice girl btw
 
Feel free to PM me if you have questions on Ave Maria. I graduated from the MA program there. Theology is its strongest program, IMHO, along with the sister programs of Philosophy and Early Christian Lit. If that doesn’t float your boat, probably better places to go than the swamp. :rolleyes:
