Does anyone know much about the Newman Center associated with Truman State in Kirksville Missouri? It’s a college we’re considering but I want to be sure there is a faithful Newman Center available.

Its has a website. You can access the priests homilies on that website as well as review the activities schedules.

I only looked around for a couple of minutes, a few of positives I noted:
  1. They have a “traditional mass” every Sunday. Presumably this means organ music etc. and not a Latin mass.
  2. The have weekly confession schedule.
  3. They have adoration one day a week.
I would recommend giving them a call. Let us know what you find out, I have a child who might consider this school in a couple of years.

As a former student at Truman who was actively involved in the Newman Center, and a current Truman employee, I can say without a doubt that the Newman Center at Truman State University is a strong, faith-filled, student-led community. The time that I spent there significantly impacted my growth in the Catholic faith. Students at Truman can be as actively involved as they would like to be through service events and trips, social events at Newman and with other faith communities, or by simply coming to any of the 5 masses that are available throughout the week. Our traditional mass is 11 am (piano and traditional music), and 7 pm mass is Praise and Worship style music. Masses are also held at 11:30 on Mondays, and 9 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We also offer adoration on Thursdays from 8-9, with praise and worship in the chapel during the last hour. Our priest, Fr. Bill Kottenstette, is a wonderful man who really does connect so deeply with the students there. I highly recommend visiting so that you and your student can see for yourself how impacted current students are by Newman. The director of the Newman Center loves speaking with prospective students, so if you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact him! His email is on the website at newmantruman.org!

Thank you! I was hopeful after viewing the website. We are looking at Catholic colleges (of which only a handful are acceptable IMHO) but if we end up with a non-Catholic institution we want to be sure there is a strong Catholic presence near the campus. We will definitely set up a visit with the Newman Center when we do our college visit. If anyone else has anything else to offer or say, I’d really appreciate it.

Is FOCUS at Truman State? If so, that would be a good sign of a strong Catholic presence on campus.

I will double down on everything Lorna said. Both of my children went there and were very active at the Newman center. They both met their current spouse or significant other there which has been a blessing. My DS in particular spent a lot of time there hanging out and most of his best friends were active.

On another note - both loved truman. For the price, you can’t beat the value. Feel free to private message me if you want more particulars from a parent perspective.

Truman doesn’t have a FOCUS organization, but we do have a very strong Students for Life organization. Please feel free to private message me if you have any additional questions!
